This is incredible. I love how well you've drawn conflicted!Kahlan, and I love that even Confessed, Darken is still cunning and intelligent. The tension you've created here is just so beautifully intense.

And OMG, Salindra. So adorable and practical, and her friendship with Kahlan works so well, and she doesn't like children and it makes perfect sense...

Zedd/Serena - fascinating possibilities. And Serena's just all, do what I want or I'll Confess you, to everyone she meets.

My heart is breaking for Dennee, even though we barely see her. And Cara, and as for Nicholas I'm torn between fear that he'll be like canon!Nicholas and hope that he'll miraculously survive and not be evil (just like Kahlan).

And, can I just say, the artwork for this is gorgeous :D

Oh thank you so much! I'm so glad you like Kahlan, as I was as conflicted as she is writing her! This story was an unusually difficult one for me - I'm still not very sure about it at all.

And lol yes, I don't even know what Salindra is going to say half the time. I just seem to have this inner Salindra where I go "Go Salindra!" and she just does things.

Zedd/Serena! I don't come out and say it in the fic itself, but it's my head canon that Zedd is the father of Serena's son - the product of them both being at a state function in Rothenberg when Zedd was a young playboy - though he doesn't necessarily know the child was his.

Zedd/Serena! I don't come out and say it in the fic itself, but it's my head canon that Zedd is the father of Serena's son - the product of them both being at a state function in Rothenberg when Zedd was a young playboy - though he doesn't necessarily know the child was his.

Wow - I could totally see that happening. And of course, Zedd is all convinced he never slipped up on the contraception spells, but in Rothenberg they wouldn't work, and it would be totally impulsive and just. There should be backstory for this. *encourages you to write Zedd/Serena backstory...*

Tell you what: I will write Zedd/Serena at Rothenberg, when you do an added scene to The Denna Dilemma where Denna is the princess when they have to rescue Kahlan.

It wouldn’t do to have any bastard sons competing with her daughter for the throne. No, it would not, and it is a wise precaution.

A male Confessor could not be suffered to live. Serena knew that better than most. The more I think about this, the more it bothers me. If she'd owned up to her hypocrisy and held her son up as an example of a male Confessor gone rogue, maybe others would be more inclined to listen. It's been so long, for most people, that a male Confessor is as mythical as a Shadrin or the Seeker, and until they're faced with the danger themselves, they need more proof than 'fairy tales'.

And in some strange way, she had become his. He was the only person for leagues that knew her - who she truly was. Very true. It's an interesting dynamic.

Yes - Serena doesn't want to admit to her shame that she flouted the law about male Confessors, and it resulted in death and destruction, yet if she had, maybe things would go differently now.

Zeeed/Serennaaaa yeeeeessss. You know how I love Zeddmance, and I really think they had one in canon, just from how they interact. There's more of them in the next part.

YAY FOR WARMING UP TO SALINDRA.

And huzzah for seeing the Kahlan/Salindra, Kahlan/Darken dichotomy. That was unintentional actually, but much like Tyrion is with you, Salindra just sort of writes herself for me. She was only supposed to be in the first scene of this fic, but then she picked herself up and wrote herself a storyline.
