Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Oct 12, 2011 07:20

I usually try to keep my journal a politically free space, but this needs attention that it is unfortunately not getting in other mediums:

There is a proposed amendment to the Mississippi Constitution that will grant personhood status to eggs and embryos. Abortion issues aside, this amendment would also prevent women from using birth control, ( Read more... )

Much as this entire debacle sickens me, I'm cheered to see people in my 'circle' protesting against this. Thank you for being so brave and for trying to make a difference.

I don't know if it's bravery so much as self preservation.

Thank you for boosting the signal and posting about it. You inspired me to break my usual "fandom related only" rule on my journal (I usually want this to be a fun space for recreation only). But this is too important.

Also here's another link to a conservative point of view of why the amendment should not pass: http://bobbyshead.blogspot.com/2011/08/vote-no-on-26-mississippi-here-is-why.html

This is horrifying.

I can't believe how certain elements who want to establish their own brand of theocracy in this country have already succeeded in pushing back so many of the hard won gains women have made in the area of reproductive freedom. There's a sickness creeping over our land, and it scares me to death.

Thanks for sharing this and for fighting back. I know I should be doing more, and I'll be following through.

I have to believe that good sense and justice will prevail.

OMG this is horrible! O_O

I liked the facebook page (sadly I don't see how else I can be of help) and why the fuck it has only 650 likes? O_O

I hope people will wake up and realize what they are doing!

You are very brave to fight against it!
*hugs*

This is just so awful.

I can't understand how anyone could think such an amendment even makes sense, and I'm sure you're right and it's unconstitutional.

I'm glad you posted this - I read the New York Times, at least occasionally, and I hadn't heard about this before, which I find disturbing.

You're so brave to fight back.

Thanks for the support!

That's one of the most frightening things about this amendment - is how little the media is covering it!

Just started a viral video campaign here: http://pristineungift.livejournal.com/112391.html

This is apalling. You'd think that in the 21st century we could continue moving forwards instead of backwards.

You know, for me the US was always a place I wanted to live - the beacon of democracy and everything cool - but at the moment I'm actually glad not to be living there, when I see that black people are executed, although there's evidence that they might be innocent, when I see that a kid probably will be convicted as an adult, when I see this. Not that here everyhting is better, but here I can do with my vagina whatever I want to.

I'm shocked and disgusted by this. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I was absolutely not aware of this.

You are amazing for fighting!
