Marry me!!!

Recently I've been reading Ranma 1/2 manga...in Vol. 12 there's a plot line featuring a giant cat that lives in a bell. His goal in life/obsession is to find a human girl to marry and he proposes marriage to every girl he meets. He also says thing like, "My bride!"; "Then, if I defeat him...you must marry me!"; and "A new bride!" whenever he meets ( Read more... )

discussion, character: neko-sensei

You know I never even made that connection.

Mind is blown.

I wondered why both these cats weren't interested in marrying into their own species.

Good question! I remember feeling like my mind was blown when I realized partway through watching Princess Tutu, that Neko-sensei had come to seem like one of the least strange things.

A Ranma reference would totally make sense, given the whole changing-into-an-animal-and-changing-back-with-water gimmick. There must be some kind of reference involved with Neko sensei, he's just too weird otherwise!

I didn't even think about the changing with water aspect!

I've often wondered it there is some sort of Japanese folktale that deals with a cat proposing marriage to girls, since it is used occasionally for laughs in a number of different manga/anime. (off the top of my head, The Cat Returns also uses it as a major plot point, and I feel like it pops up other places but I can't think of any right now.)

I've never seen The Cat Returns but I've heard it's really good.

The Cat Returns is wonderful! You must see it, when you get the chance. :)

There is a Japanese folklore about cats proposing marriage to young girls, so I doubt that PT is trying to pay homage to Ranma 1/2 with Neko-sensei.

Awesome! Do you know if the cat in those stories has a specific name or how those stories might be referred to? I'd be interested in trying to find more information about it.

Ooh, thanks for the link! (Although I am having some trouble getting past the "cats drinking lamp oil" bit. The part about turning fresh corpses into zombies also cracks me up.)

Oh, wow...checking on the "mythological felines" link at the bottom of the article reveals that there's actually an article about cabbits! It contains the wonderful line, It is genetically impossible for a cat and a rabbit to produce offspring together.
