You know what? This time, I won't be linking to the last post in this series. "Oh noes!" I hear you cry. "The link to the last post was the best part of every post! Now what will we do?"

Well, here's the thing. Our wonderous mods have provided a tag specifically for Spot the Reference, and if you click on it...you'll get every post in the StR ( Read more... )

Okey, here is my little theory about Rachel or Raetsel (Rätsel means btw. Riddle in german)

In Bartered Bride, the main couple is called Jeník and Mařenka (which are the czech names John and Mary). In case of this opera is the german translation Hans und Maria, however the names Jeník and Mařenka are common names in fairytales, and in that case, they are translated as Hänsel und Gretel.

And, here my theory: the original name was Gretel, but with the "magic" of japanese pronounciation, something that sounds like Ratsel came out (believe me, it is possible. I was actualy persuaded it is Gretel until I saw the subtitles).

Sorry for this linguistic paragraph, but I am from Slovakia, which was for long years in one state with Czech, therefore I just felt like I had to explain this.

And although I know Moldau is probably a very hard song, I love it to pieces (and Smetana too).

That's an awesome theory.

Moldau is very pretty. It's just so very, very tiring.

This is perhaps not very spot-the-referency but I just rewatched PT and the end of this episode has been nagging me. When Hans appears, Fakir admits to Rätsel (I really like that connection w/ "riddle" histuji!)that he has just tried his hand at writing a story for her, but when Ahiru asks him about it, he looks at Hans and Rätsel and says that it must not have worked.

I can't get the question out of my head. What story do you think Fakir wrote for Rätsel? What ending? A story for her and Charon? Is that why she took it with her with a knowing look?
