So, uhm, in a moment of either random stupidity or masochistic craziness (or some twisted combination of both), I signed up for NaNoWriMo. About this time last week, actually. Like I don't already have enough on my plate, between work and point-whoring for Slytherin on
OWL. Then, this morning, I made the mistake of telling my best friend (also

And when you're done -- and I'm sure you will finish even if you miss the deadline, then you'll have an o-fic you can show off and hopefully get published.
Don't waste your energy on thoughts of failure. Failure does not exist in this scenario. It's all win, so have fun with it. *hugs*

I agree that figuring out a plot - and one that will be complex enough to take up 50,000 words - is probably the biggest hurdle in this endeavor. But it will be pretty awesome when you're done and have a story with your own characters to show for it. I've heard of one person who writes both HP fanfic and their own o-fic (published), whose o-fic "hero" is surprisingly 'Snape-ish' ;) without the teaching and such, of course. :)
And as for Slytherin, I'm jumping back into my "points whoring" roll this month so if you have to slack off on that end a bit, at least there's another Housemate taking back up the reigns (who was absent for all of last month! eek!!) so it kind of balances out. :)
Go you! and Go Slytherin!! :)

Also, if you're looking to point-whore for us, I have a whole archive full of fics for you to look at! I'm just sayin'... ;)
I can't see myself giving up fanfic, honestly, even if I do manage to find an original plotline that I like well enough to maintain it for 50,000 words (I have a few in the concept drawer that look promising). Although I manage to fail in the R&R category every time I turn around, I manage to write enough to make up for it.
