As he careered around the track, Rex Racer had but one thought in his head; tonight was his night. Tonight he would make history, tonight he would dice the track record and leave everyone in his dust. He was just glad that Speedy was here to see it.
He’d pulled so far ahead of the other cars that none of them had a hope of catching up to him. They were all running for second.
They were on the last lap when he caught sight of it; a white car. The ghost of Thunderhead. He’d seen it a few times before - so he knew not to be distracted by it - but it had never come this close before. Now, for the first time, he could make out the driver, faint, but distinct.
He’d never expected it to have such beautiful eyes.
They raced neck and neck, hurtling towards the finish, with Rex desperately trying not to be distracted by pretty, pretty eyes that shouldn’t be there and certainly shouldn’t be staring at him in that awful, heart wrenching way. Like he had lost his all and everything. The single tear had nearly undone him, and it took all his strength not to go flying off the track.
He wanted to hold it, to caress it, to stare at those pretty, pretty eyes all night, every night and kiss that deep sorrow away.
But then it was slowing down, and Rex wasn’t, and Rex was winning, and the crowd was cheering, and the ghostly car was speeding towards him…and it was gone.
It was too soon to puzzle things over, as he had a trophy to collect and a family coming to share his victory, and a little brother to hug and hold. A little brother with such pretty, pretty eyes.
And at the same time, but over a decade apart, the Racer brothers made the same startling realization that there were in fact two ghosts at Thunderhead.
