I don't like writing in the Book of Crossroads, so I decided to start using this machine. Lyra helped me learn how to use it. I'm staying with her right now...she was nice enough to let me stay here until I get used to this place. Estella's been having fun exploring and she really likes Pantalaimon

Oh, not you, Pantalaimon. My guardian back home, his name was Pan. He's the faun god, and he had a reputation before he was enlisted in my father's service.

It's fine. I don't mind having someone else around. And if you want to be alone sometime, that's fine- Pan and I can just head out for a bit.

And if you want to go exploring sometime, well, one of the other people that lives in the flat-her name's Heather, she said she'd take me to the Underground to go exploring! You could come with us!

No. I'm glad I grew up in Jordan College.

I don't like to admit it, but this place scares me a bit. I've always had someone to watch over me and make sure I'm safe, but no one is here...not Pan, or even Mercedes. Estella's a good friend, but as a fairy, she can't do too much; she's small.

But thank you for being so kind to me Ptolemy; I hope you wouldn't mind if I called you my friend....?

I am not scared of this place, though I can see why it could be frightening. I have been lucky in that I have friends here; without them, I would find this place far more difficult to reside in.

Even if you have no one else from your world, though, you do have yourself. An intelligent mind, a strong body...there is much to be said for those things.

I do not mind if you call me friend, your highness.
