Back in 2006, there was an article in Smithsonian magazine concerning the authorship of Shakespeare's plays which focused on Edward de Vere. It's an evenhanded article, but ultimately points out that all the evidence supporting the de Vere claim is (to put it kindly) purely speculative. I'm not so kind, so I call it wishful thinking. I particularly like how one scholar in the article points out that the material which can definitely be attributed to de Vere ranges in quality from mediocre to Gawdawful.

Byron, of course, but I don't know if your second one can really be Rochester. Who have I forgotten?

… The Earl of Chesterfield's Letters to his Son is pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd call it great literature.
