Jack the Ripper Kills My Feet

Dec 01, 2008 20:29

Today, robin_d_laws and the wonderful Valerie left to return to their Care-Bear-infested, cruller-enriched demi-paradise, leaving me bereft and at loose ends.

After a decorous interval, simonjrogers decreed hooky from work, and we descended into Whitechapel to go on an extremely self-guided (and I use the term "guided" advisedly) walking tour of Ripper sites. We managed ( Read more... )

No visit to Christchurch Spitalfields? Or did you go there on a previous visit to the Sceptered Isle?

and looked in at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which cast both the Liberty Bell and Big Ben, and thus pretty much closes the competition for "Best Bell Foundry."

Though the latter of the two suggests certain quality control issues.

According to Wikipedia, the Procrastinators' Society of America agreed, and staged a protest at the foundry in 1976. (Whitechapel Foundry responded that they'd be glad to replace the bell, "as long as it was returned to us in its original packaging.")

Shurely it was the former that had QA issues? I've never been into the foundry, as they now charge a fairly hefty fee for a tour, and aren't allowed to show the cool bits due to safety regs. Apparently they used to be really happy to show you round if you had an interest, but then they got mentioned in a guidebook or suchlike, and the increased trade meant that they had to do things more formally.

You were actually in the neighborhood of the Gherkin? Cool. When I was playing a superpowered spy in rhinogirl's campaign back in 2007, she told us all that our agency's ultrasecret HQ was in the Gherkin, and I googled it and was amazed. . . .

If you think it looks cool from the outside, just wait until you've had the chance to get inside...

[Yes, I know, I am a lucky, lucky swine!]

chilledchimp and I did the walk last year. We were in Mitre Square, standing on the site of the last murder but one, when she felt a hand on her back, but nobody was there. Spooky, for her anyway. But Jack the Bum Pincher doesn't quite do it for me.

She says I have no soul. I agree.
