You pay for tire recycling, so why are they making a mess? #maryland

Are ugly tires littering your neighborhoods and streets? Did you know that if you get your tires properly taken care of in the state of Maryland that they charge you an 80 cent recycling fee? It's to clean up illegally scrapped tires.

You can help reduce the scrap tire problem. see the Department of the Environment's fact sheet here.

The reason why we see tires all over the place is because the landfill charges $175 per ton. We pay 80 cents per tire to support collection because of the tipping fees at the landfill. I'd like to see a temporary moratorium on tire tipping fees to see how much it helps solve the problem.

I hope you don't mind, but I'll share this with our church's Green Sanctuary Committee who gave me the idea to look that up, because they were talking about what we could do to solve the tire problem. The 80 cent fee is state and the landfill is county, so I guess we'd have to appeal to our county council about that. During these hard financial times, I wish I could say I think they'd do it, but that's probably on an income line in some budget that's part of the county budget. Sometimes the things that seem like they should be the easiest to change are really not, but it would be good if we could make the effort. If not through a church program, maybe through our networking with civic and environmental organizations.
