Chapter Three

They were sitting on the grassy edge of the duck pond that he had just questioned to authenticity of. The red-haired girl was sat beside him, half in a mood, half concerned. The regeneration twinges had gotten the better of him yet again, although not as bad as last time. Ironic that radiation killed him twice in a row. He could feel it every now and again and it made him wince and buckle in crippling agony as his body was still trying to heal itself. Short sharp pains that hit him mostly in the hearts, but had caused him to collapse back onto the grassy verge. She had been with him all day, as they battled with the Face Tendril, as he had come to affectionately call it, and now it was all over. What was he meant to say to her? Could he let another one back in? She seemed to be the type that would love to travel and see the universe. What good was the universe to someone who knew it so well, no, it was showing the people who would otherwise never get a chance what was out there. Seeing the excitement on their faces as they saw other worlds, other races, that he loved.

‘Are you okay?’ the girl asked him again, and he replied with what he had been for the last minute.

‘It’s just not done.’

‘Why do you keep saying that?’

‘Because you wouldn’t believe me if I tried.’

She shook that long red hair out of her face, pushing it to one side as the wind took it and stared at him.

‘I believe that you’re the same man who crashed into my garden in a flaming time machine when I was just seven years old, I think I deserve some credit here, fifteen years of therapy, remember. I’ve seen a lot of things today Doctor, how could I not believe what you say?’

He rolled his head to look at the twenty something girl, who just a few hours ago was intent on sexual assaulting him. He squinted an eye, then rubbed his hands over his face, sweeping back that new long dark fringe that needed cutting.

‘Im not human.’

‘Shut up.’

‘No really Im not.’

‘I can’t believe that, I mean look at you.’

‘Will this prove it to you.’ he took one of her pale, dainty hands and pulled it to his chest, first on the side a normal human heart would have been. Her face showed no surprise as he could hear the sound in her mind through the touch, and then, her face changed to perplexion as she heard the double whooshing beat. He lifted it from the left side and put it on his right, next to his second heart and her eyes went wide, dark green pupils, that bordered on brown looking into his own.

She didn’t say anything, and he took this as something to go on.

‘Im a Timelord, from the planet Galifrey. And the reason Im like this, is because I died today.’

‘Im sorry.’ she whispered, she didn’t move her hand.

‘So am I.’

She waved her other hand indicating him. ‘But you look alive to me.’

He sighed and ran another hand through his locks, he hated starting over. ‘I regenerated, it’s a Timelord’s way of cheating death.’

‘But it means I change the way I look, the way I talk, the way I am. I used to be a brown haired, brown eyed thirty something, and I loved it. I loved the people I was with when I was him, and he was me. And now Im this…’ he trailed off.

‘Can you imagine, how disorientating this is?’

She rested her head on his shoulder.

‘Can’t you go home?’

He looked at her. ‘That’s a story for another day.’

Amy stood there in a kitchenette of the Torchwood 4 Hub. Gwen stood at the other side, assessing the girl with a critical eye, Rhy’s wouldn’t believe that she’d met Rory’s girlfriend. They hadn’t been to Scotland since the wedding, and that was only when they had to visit his sister.

She was pretty, in a unusual sort of way. Nice browny-green eyes, that complemented her pale complexion. Long red hair, that was wavy in some places and curly in others.
She was wearing a large red hoodie, and a very, very short miniskirt, tights and a striking blue pair of converse, and right now she was absently picking at her purple nail varnish.

‘So. How did you meet him, the Doctor, the stuff of legends.’

‘I tried to sexually assault him.’

Gwen spat her tea onto the side in surprise, then quickly recovered at Amy’s amused expression. She liked the girl, she instantly decided, she took matter’s into her own hands, and that reminded her of herself.

‘You got any kids?’ Amy asked her.

Gwen smiled brightly ‘One, recently actually, Iantoya her name is.’

‘Different name.’

‘Yeah, she’s erm, in remembrance of someone, we used to work with. He turned into a woman once, and that’s what we called him to take the piss.’

Amy backtracked ‘Oh, Im sorry, I shouldn’t have.’

‘No, no, pet, it’s quite alright. See, we used to have a Tosh, a shy Asian girl, she was nice, never said a bad word about anyone. Owen, now he was one arrogant bastard.’ She laughed humourlessly, and then turned to stare out the window, looking at Jack.

‘And we had Ianto. He died recently, protecting the children from that thing. And Jack… hasn’t been the same since.’

He sat on the sofa, well sprawled really, and watched Jack fiddle with his vortex manipulator. He had told him, again, and again, that it would not work if he didn’t want it too. But the stubborn Captain refused to let it get him down. The screen had told him, that the signal that was reaching the rift, and trying to manipulate it was from Ur Theta, a far reaching planet west of the Medusa Cascade. Nobody really went there, not since the planet was deemed ‘Unfit.’ to host life back in his time. It was a barren place, mostly rocks and seas. But the oxygen was low, and the native species had long since died out.

So what could be transmitting the signal?

The brain did some calculations, if the Shadow Proclamation were on it, then they would not appreciate someone or some organisation interfering in their business. But if the signal was specifically trying to get to the rift.

It wouldn’t hurt surely, if they just went to Ur Theta for a quick look, see if there was anything he could do?

‘Doctor?’ Jack’s voice snapped him out if his thoughts.

The Captain was staring at him with level blue eyes, and he raised an eyebrow.

‘You doing okay?’

He swallowed ‘What do you mean, never been better.’

‘You just seem…more different than the last time you regenerated. More of a different man..’ He trailed off, throwing his arms around him as he tried to explain his point.

‘That’s because I am, I feel like I am…I don’t know what I feel…’ he himself found his sentence to get away from him. He was so confused, this regeneration was new, and different. His previous incarnations had had no reaction to things such as the gentle flirting Amy gave him, but this one was ready to give back as good as he got. And it threw him off balance every time it happened, and Amy had a flirtatious nature.

Jack could tell that he wasn’t really ready to talk about it, he was racking his brain for another topic, spying Amy through the window talking amicably to Gwen, he turned back to the Doctor. He was beaten to it however, as he spun round to see the young Time Lord standing there, an expression of what only could have been called remorse on his smooth face.

‘How are you holding up Jack?’

Jack licked his lips. ‘Im fine.’

‘How long since you last slept?’ He could see Jack about to protest ‘Or tried to in some fashion? How long since you ate properly? Drank something?’

That hit a nerve with Jack, as he visibly winced ‘I don’t drink coffee anymore.’ he muttered.

‘I noticed.’

It was silent for a minute between the two men, and then the Doctor spoke up.

‘I am sorry, I am so sorry for not being there Jack, when you so obviously needed me. But look at what you did! You saved the world single handily, and your motto was always save millions, not one life.’

‘I didn’t want it to be that life!’ Jack spat at him. ‘Not his life!’ Then more softly ‘Anyone but him.’

The Doctor lowered his voice.

‘You need to take a break. You need to stop beating yourself up. When I came back to you after that, I could see that you had died. On the inside. You starved yourself, killed yourself again and again and again. And you have got a lot better, but not enough. I know you can’t get over him, and I don’t expect you too. But we could do so much more.’

Jack was oddly silent, slumping down in his chair in defeat, what was the Doctor saying? Was he suggesting they should run together again? Time and space?

The computer beeped gently and he kicked it with his foot. Gwen came out the office then, obviously hearing the sound of the small alarm. She saw the posture that both men were in, and stopped, Jack briefly wondered how they looked, but the thought was squashed when the computer beeped again, more insistent this time.

He frowned, pressed a button on the screen and something started whirring. A hologram on the screen burst into life, casting a blue pre-recorded message across the Hub. It severed it’s hold on the hologram and forced the tip into the wrist strap of Jack’s manipulator.

‘Jack. It’s me. I wouldn’t usually do this but it’s urgent.’
