"Er...wasn't he deaf?"

"Yeeup. Started losing his hearing in his mid-twenties. Took to using things like ear horns and other aids to help him hear until he went totally deaf. There's a somewhat well known story that at the end of the premier performance of the Ninth Symphony, his final completed one by the way, he had to be turned around to see the massive applause he was being given, and when he heard absolutely none of it, he began to weep."

"So he heard all the music in his head when he wrote it?"

"Yes, essentially. But I wouldn't recommend anyone actually try to do that. It was difficult even for him."
