I really like the explanation for Gaila surviving. I was sitting there through the movie wondering if all those poor cadets were just goners.
Poor Jim, he wants everyone who he can't have. Let him have some cake, Bones! (hahaha, genes prone to obesity. hahaha!)

The same here. I couldn't stand the idea that no one except the Enterprise crew survived. Plus Gaila was an interesting character; I couldn't just let her go.
Jim is just.... Jim. XD Let him eat cake in peace Bones! (*giggle* I actually read that in a shrunken Spock Fanfic because Bones wouldn't have Jim have salted and buttered popcorn.)
