It's challenging when you don't have much in common with family. It sounds like you made the best of it, though. Maybe next time bring a board game or something? I plan to bring my Fluxx deck home with me this trip, just in case. It's a way to interact without having to be creative about conversation. Would they be open to something like that?

I know my parents have some board games, but I couldn't get anyone interested. It's hard when you have the best interactions with a four-year old who doesn't even speak the same language.

Thanks for posting about your get-together. It prompted strong (mostly pleasant) memories of similar family gatherings with my in-laws' family back when we were all younger and lived near-by. We *like* each other well enough, but have no common basis for conversation.
