The Things We Can't Control Master Post Chapter 20 ~Fights, Rumors, and Lies~
Oh, that one was definitely gonna leave a bruise. Kame hadn’t meant to hit Yoko quite that hard. He hadn’t even realized he could hit so hard! But it had connected perfectly, sending Yoko both backwards and into unconsciousness.
Oops.
But Kame didn’t feel too bad about it. Yoko had already knocked him out twice in three days and just pounded the crap out of him at least 3 other instances in those same three days. But slowly, Kame was improving. Thank goodness!
At first, Kame had been so hyper-aware of his surroundings. In addition to being, well, utterly exhausting, it also didn’t work any better than a normal sense of awareness did. In fact, it was probably worse, because every little sound or shadow became more suspicious and that made it harder to identify actual threats even when you notice them around you. Kame had started to get over that, finally. He was learning a different kind of awareness of his surroundings, something between exhaustingly on-edge and completely dense. That in turn meant more of his energy could be saved for the actual danger instead of monitoring for the danger.
And, apparently, it really made a difference. Kame couldn’t help but think this as he looked down at the unconscious Yoko.
Well, they had a deal. Yoko had watched over him safely both times he’d knocked Kame out, so Kame did his best to half-drag-half-carry Yoko to the alley, out of the way, leaning him against the wall and settling down beside him. Yoko was much bigger than he was (another reason he was surprised he’d been able to knock him out) so it was a difficult task but he got it done.
So now what?
Kame was kind of hungry after the fight, but he didn’t dare abandon Yoko to go buy food. Hina had a bad habit of stealing other whores’ hard-earned money when they weren’t looking and Yoko would get pissed if Kame let that happen. And it’s not like there was someone Kame could send to fetch it; they’d just take his money and laugh as they walked away.
No, he would have to wait until Yoko came ‘round.
Which didn’t take all that long, actually. It couldn’t have been more than fifteen minutes before a mumbled, “Why does my ass feel like it was dragged over gravel…?” came from the now-moving boy.
“Sorry, you were too heavy to pick up. I did my best.”
“Where did you learn that punch? I didn’t teach you that one!” Yoko laughed, feeling the bruise on his face. “Wow, that’s…. yeah…”
Hina’s voice came from behind Kame. “Oh, don’t be such a baby, Yoko-chan.”
“Who’s a baby?” Yoko snapped. “I could still break you!”
“Break who? Did you knock out Kame ag-” came Ryuichi’s voice from the entrance to the alley, but he stopped mid-sentence when he got close enough to see what was going on. He didn’t look too happy that Kame had finally gotten Yoko. He looked downright angry over it. “You know you’re gonna lose money with that ugly bruise, Yoko! You ain’t charging him AND you’re letting him cost you money, too?”
But Yoko just laughed. “Sure, that’s why you care. It has nothing to do with your future ability to fuck Kame…”
“Nobody here is fucking me!” Kame practically shrieked.
“I am, in a few days, and you can just try to stop me. I’ll kick you out of here. Don’t think I won’t!” Ryuichi insisted.
“You mean you’ll try!” Kame shot back.
“Oh, I’ll do more than…”
But Hina’s voice cut through the arguing with, “Hey, did you guys hear the rumor about Papa K?”
“That he’s missing?” Ryuichi asked, turning more towards Hina. “Yeah, I heard that a couple weeks ago. Old news.”
Hina shook his head. “No, he’s back. And you’ll never guess what!”
“What?”
Kame leaned in to whisper to Yoko, “Who’s Papa K?”
Yoko whispered back, “He’s a pimp over around the hotels. Worst sort. Stay away from there.”
Hina continued, apparently oblivious to Kame and Yoko’s hushed conversation. “Someone stabbed him!”
“No shit?” and Ryuichi sounded impressed, which Kame couldn’t remember ever hearing before. “He survived being stabbed? I swear, that man ain’t human. Who did it?”
“I don’t know. Rumor said it was one of his whores though which of those sluts would have the courage to do it, I wonder?”
It sounded like Hina didn’t much approve of the whores who worked for pimps, though Kame couldn’t help but wonder how living with a… what was the term Yoko used… “sugar daddy”? Well, Kame couldn’t see how that was any different and the word around the stroll was that Hina in the past three years had at least five of them.
“Hmm… well, all of them probably have a reason. Where’d it happen?” This was from Yoko.
“That’s just it! Nobody seems to know. He just disappeared for two weeks and then showed back up missing an eye,” Hina said.
An eye?! Papa K? No, it… it couldn’t be…
Could it?
No, he was the only one his father had… had been selling. Hadn’t he been the only one? His father had told him that sex was all he was good for and that it was his duty as a good son to do this, to earn money for “the family” which, basically, meant for him. He’d always gotten so mad if Kame didn’t earn him enough money, if he failed to keep the customers there as long as possible. If he wasn’t their only source of income, why had his father gotten so very angry all those times? Why had he sold him to that monster?
No, it couldn’t be…
Still…
“Which eye?”
“Uh… I don’t know, does it matter?” But as Kame glared at him, Hina shook his head and looked thoughtful for a moment. “Left I think? Seriously, does it matter? The fun part is that someone stabbed him; it doesn’t matter what damn eye it was! An eye is an eye!”
Kame sighed and shrugged. “It’s not important.” Read: it’s important. “I was just curious.” Read: it’s a matter of life and death that I know this. “Say, what does the K stand for anyway? What’s his real name?”
Ryuichi was the one to answer this, “Nobody knows what the K stands for. At least, nobody on the street. Doesn’t bother anyone, though. We all just call him Papa K. Seriously, though, you’re just the type he likes to sell. He’d snatch your sexy ass right up and put you to work for him. Stay clear of his stroll. He’s not so nice as me.”
Both Yoko and Hina were now giving Kame strange looks (though, thankfully, Ryuichi seemed oblivious) and Kame couldn’t help but flush nervously under their stares. So Kame finally said, “I’m going to get something to eat. I’ll be back in a bit, guys…” He stood and walked off.
“Hey, I’ll come with you!” came Hina’s voice behind him and the next thing Kame knew, Hina had his arm thrown over Kame’s shoulder.
Shoving the arm off, Kame hissed, “Don’t touch me. And if we get there and I’m missing any money, I swear to god I’ll kick your ass right there in the conbini. Understand?”
Hina gave an exasperated sigh and pushed a wad of money into Kame’s hand, which quickly closed around it possessively. “That better be all of it.”
“Hey, if I’m lying, I’m dying.”
Only one thought crossed his mind in response…
Don’t tempt me.

The story continues:
Chapter 21 ~Waiting Out the Hellions' Mission~ A/N: Okay, sorry about the delay. I wanted to finish this much earlier but for absolutely no reason I've been able to discover within eyesight of my house, my power went out for like four hours during the hottest part of the day. Say, doesn't my computer run on power?
So I had to wait for the power and then wait for the house to cool off enough to do more that lie on the couch complaining to my cat about how ungodly hot it was (I get really sick in the heat really fast). Do you know how long it takes to cool a house with two window units, one of which is almost dying and can't be set above "low cool" or it starts to sound like it's tearing the wall down (which, it actually might do soon because, well, the wood that supports the big one in the kitchen is rotting away because of the condensation dripping from it (usually) outside.
But then I got in here and though I took a few eating breaks (oh, did I mention that though my stove is wonderfully a gas stove, it has an electric start? And since we tossed our lighters when we quit smoking, I couldn't cook anything to eat during the time I'd usually eat twice?), I have a short chapter here for you so hope you like it (^_^) I hope those three chapters I had to rewrite when the power punked me came out semi-decent.
Well, it seems Kame is learning to take care of himself. I wonder what will happen if the others find out he's Papa K's son?
Anyway, next chapter: kids' mission to gather Ueda intell goes underway. Looking forward to writing that!
