Chapter 62 ~Finding Yurina~

While Naito was out from the blow, Kame snatched up the fallen men’s weapons.  Hmm… Two guns and a whole handful of knives.  Impractical to carry all of them on him useful to have.  Grabbing one of the duffle bags off of the side table, he pulled all of the white packages out of it, throwing them carelessly to the side.

He put the pipe he’d used to incapacitate Naito’s men (he didn’t know if they were dead or alive but, frankly speaking, at that moment he really didn’t care) and one of the two guns and all but two of the knives in the duffle bag.

Naito’s car (or what he assumed was Naito’s car) was still in the warehouse but Kame didn’t think it was a good idea to try to drive it to take them to some other location.  He’d just have to question him there.  There had to be something…

Ah.

Rope.  Well, more twine, really, but it would do.  Kame grabbed the man’s arm with both hands and dragged him across the floor to the nearest vertical support beam.  He tied the man’s wrists together behind the beam with what was probably entirely more twine than he needed but it was nice and tight and the man wasn’t going anywhere.

Then he tried to wake the guy up.

Naito didn’t seem to want to wake up.

Damn, he shouldn’t have hit him quite so hard.  But he kept trying and maybe eight or nine minutes later, the man stirred.

“The hell…” Naito mumbled when he’d recovered enough to realize his wrists were tied together.

“Where is he going?” Kame asked, his voice cold and hard.

Naito blinked in confusion upon laying eyes on Kame.  “You’re not a cop.”

“Did I ask you where he was going?  I forget.”

Scoffing, Naito said, “Oh, yeah, like I’m going to just tell some punk kid.  Run home to mommy!”

Without so much as a second thought, Kame shot the man in the knee.  “I must have forgotten to ask you where he was going.  My bad,” he said loudly over the sound of Naito’s pained scream.  “Where is he going?”

“Fuck you!” the man said through gritted teeth.

Bang.  Other knee.  Another scream from the drug dealer.  Kame shook his head.  “I really need to work on my communication skills.  Let’s try this, then.”

Scooting a bit closer to the man, Kame shoved the barrel of the gun hard into the drug dealer’s crotch.  “Where.  Is.  He.  Going?”

“I’ll tell you!  I’ll tell you!” and the guy grunted as Kame pushed the gun even harder.  “He has this place… he runs drugs and hookers from there.  Over on Martin Street.  House has a huge X scratched into the door.  He’ll head there, I know it.  Probably not for a couple days but eventually!”

“Where would he go immediately?”

“I dunno.  Maybe home?” Naito said uncertainly.  “But I don’t know where that is.”

“Really?”

Naito looked so desperate as he said, “Really!  I don’t know!  But he’ll go there, I promise you.  Please, please don’t pull that trigger!  Please!  I don’t know!  I really don’t!”

“What’s his full name?”

“Abe Mitsuru.”

Kame was pretty sure the man was telling the truth.  Well, he had a name and a place to watch.  But… he couldn’t just sit there and wait for the man to show up.  He had to find him now.  Maybe there was something about him in all that information he had been gathering for the past months?

“Alright.  Answer me this last bit and if the answer satisfies me…”

The man swallowed nervously and nodded.

“The girl.  Why was she even here in the first place?”

“I… coerced her into running drugs and money.  Once she lost the protection her brothers bought her, I got my girlfriend to threaten to jam her up by planting drugs in her stuff while she was still in if she didn’t come meet me when she got out.  Found out where she lived, threatened to do the same thing to her apartment along with an anonymous phone call to send her right back to jail.  Gave her a beeper and told her to come whenever I paged.”

Poor Yurina.  No wonder she’d been so stressed and evasive, being forced to run deliveries for a damn drug dealer.

“Are you sure that’s all?”

“Yes.  She’s such a pretty face, innocent looking enough to be overlooked by cop, but strong enough to defend herself.  It makes her perfect to do the runs for me…” Naito babbled.  “That’s everything, I swear.”

“I believe you.”

He shot him right between the eyes.

Not bad, considering he’d never used a gun before.

Grabbing up the duffel bag, he clicked the safety on the gun and shoved it in there with the rest of the weapons, zipped it up again, and went back home to check his files.

Abe something.  Abe something…  Ah, Mitsuru.  That was it.

Here he was.  Abe Mitsuru… Hmm… drugs and whores mostly, it seemed.  Frequented the hostess club over on Martin and 22nd but not in a few weeks.  That was all the info he had.

Almost useless.  But, assuming he hasn’t moved in those weeks, one of the hostesses might know where he lived.  He hadn’t gotten a really good look at the guy as the car was speeding away, but he had to try.

It was already twenty past midnight.  Roughly an hour had passed since Abe’s car sped away.  The club closed at two in the morning… he could probably make it there in time, though it wouldn’t leave much time for questioning.

Kame really wished he knew someone who could just drive him.

He had to swing by an ATM to get cash but he made it to the club, a place called Mugen, by one-thirty.

Kame had never actually been inside a hostess club before so he was nervous in addition to the rising impatience bordering on panic over how long it was taking to find Yurina.  God only know what that man was doing to her.  He remembered his own experience with pissed off drug dealers, after all.

Once he started asking questions, they weren’t all that cooperative until he started throwing around money.  The girls he talked to started spilling all kinds of information on his mannerisms, habits, some other places he frequented…

But no home address.

At least his list of places to check was expanding.  Someone somewhere had to know how to find him.  Kame couldn’t just wait for him to show up at his brothel or whatever the hell that place was.  Yurina could be dead by them.

She could be dead…

No, from what he heard, Abe wanted payback but if he planned to kill her, wouldn’t he have just shot her when he thought the cops had arrived?  So she was probably still alive.

Aoi and Akira were going to kill him.  And he’d probably let them.  She was his responsibility and he’d lost her!

None of the places he’d written down from the hostesses’ information were open after two.  All he could do was go home and start fresh in the morning.  Knowing that didn’t make it an easier truth to accept but there really were some things in the world you couldn’t control after all…

But he got no sleep that night.

Kame called Ito-san first thing from the payphone out on the street in front of the apartment building and asked for a few days off.  He apologized for the last minute notice, spent a few minutes in casual conversation, and then thanked him and hung up.

First place he went was the place Naito told him about.  A few bribes got him some more info about Abe and the way he ran his business but they admitted that not even they knew where he lived.  He didn’t invite over employees other than his personal muscle.  He played everything pretty close to the chest after nearly getting caught a few years ago (that must have been the incident that landed Yurina in jail) so the only people who knew where he lived were the muscle and a handful of friends he’d known since high school.  He bought the place Kame was at so he wouldn’t have to sell his drugs directly from where he lives anymore.

Pretty much the only sure thing about where he lived they could tell him was that it wasn’t the same place as before he nearly got arrested.

Well, so much for that.

And, no, they didn’t know if he’d be in soon but he usually came once a week to collect and take a taste, both of the girls and the drugs.

Seemed Abe had a coke habit of his very own.

They did admit he hadn’t brought them a new girl in over a month.

So Yurina wasn’t there.  Kame wasn’t sure if he was relieved or not.  Had she been there, he could have stopped trying to find her and started trying to rescue her.  But it was not a place that he’d wish on her or anyone.

More time wasted.

He spent that whole day and most of the night, and the whole next day and most of the night going to any place Abe was ever rumored to have gone.

A big fat nothing.

That night, he stopped back by the place with the X on the door.  He hadn’t come by yet since the last time Kame was there, but they did get a phone call from Abe not long after Kame had left the other morning, saying he had a new girl for them.

Except then two days passed and he still hadn’t brought her, which they admitted was very unusual.

He was running out of ideas.

The next day, since he was going pretty much straight past it anyway, Kame stopped off at Ito-san’s to ask for more time off.  “You look exhausted, Kame-chan!  What’s going on?  What’s wrong?”

“I…” but what could he tell him?  He was too tired to lie so he finally just said, “A drug dealer kidnapped my friends’ sister and I can’t find them.  I’ve gone everywhere he’s ever been rumored to go but I just can’t find them.  I don’t know what to do.  She was my responsibility!”

“The police?”

Kame sighed, “I can’t go to the police.  I don’t expect you to understand why I can’t, but I just can’t.”  Though… if he hadn’t found her by tomorrow night, he’d do it.  He’d go to the police even if it meant his dad finding him.  He had to save her!  “That punk Abe Mitsuru just-”

“Him?” Ito-san said, surprise clearly evident in his voice.  “That little bastard who used to hassle my customers is his younger brother.  He’ll know how to find him.  The kid lives in that really trashy apartment building, maybe three blocks east of here?  The one with the boarded up windows on the third floor.  I’m not sure what the address is but it’s not hard to find.  He’s in there somewhere.”

“What?”

“Yeah.  But I still say you should call the cops…  Maybe I could do it for you?” Ito-san said.

“Please don’t.  I’m begging you.”  If the cops found her and found out she’d been drugged, she’d be in so much trouble.  They wouldn’t care she hadn’t done it willing; they hadn’t last time, after all.  He didn’t know how he was going to fix her situation with the parole office but he’d worry about that once he found her.  At least one failed test wouldn’t send her back to jail…

“If you think this is the best way…” but he sounded unsure.  “Well, I guess you’ve more than earned my trust so I will leave this to you.  Please, be careful.  I’ll get along without you for a while and you just come back when you can.”

Kame nodded.  “I’ll go talk to the brother and then I’ll find her and bring her home.”

Yes.  He’d do that.

But first, he’d better go back to the apartment and arm himself a bit better.  Hopefully if he shoved a gun in the kid’s face, he’d just piss himself and tell Kame everything.

And then he’d go get Yurina!

Please, let her be alive…
