The Things We Can't Control Master Post Chapter 59 ~Another Day, Another Task~
The kitchen wasn’t crowded when Jin and Kame got there, but every member of Kizuna still around that morning came along within fifteen minutes. Okay, well, not literally. But the kitchen was pretty damn full, Jin had to admit. Truthfully, it made him a bit uncomfortable because he knew they were all there to stare at him and Kame. Jin wasn’t used to being so closely watched.
Eventually it got to be a bit suffocating so Jin finally shouted, “This isn’t the freak show! Go away!”
“Jin!” Kame shrieked at him, clearly scandalized by what Jin said. At least, that’s what Jin thought at first but as Kizuna snickered, he saw Kame’s eye sparkle and he knew Kame just playing. Leaning in to whisper, Kame added, “Wanna really give them an eyeful? They might be satisfied and go away.”
“How big an eyeful?” he whispered back. Kame was making him nervous. Well, he didn’t care what Kizuna saw; that wasn’t the problem. No, the problem was, it didn’t really seem like Kame to suggest something like that.
But Kame keyed in on Jin’s discomfort and said, “Look, they won’t leave us alone until they have something to gossip about. It’s not their business, I know, but at the same time there’s no real point in hiding it. I only hide things I have a reason to hide. A damn good reason. These people know my darkest secrets already. Well, not that,” Kame hastily added when he saw Jin’s confused expression. He must have realized Jin was thinking of his scars. “But the rest, they know them. And I had far more reason to hide those than to hide this.”
Kame leaned the rest of the way into him, capturing his lips in a playful but unhurried kiss. And Kizuna went practically nuts over it. There were whispers and giggles. Some voice Jin didn’t recognize said, “About damn time. How long do you thin…” but the voice faded as whoever was speaking walked away. Everyone just sort of left in small groups.
“See?” Kame laughed. “That ought to hold them.”
“Hmm…?” Jin asked sort of distractedly as he sat there in a daze, staring at Kame’s perfect lips as they smiled warmly at him.
Kame said something else Jin didn’t quite catch. Or, he tried to. Somewhere between the first word and the last word, Jin pulled Kame forward by his shirt and kissed him again. He just… he couldn’t help it. Those lips were so soft and wonderful and Kame tasted so good and now that he could have them whenever he wanted mostly, he just couldn’t stop.
He parted Kame’s lips with his tongue and deepened the kiss. Jin could feel Kame arms around him, one of Kame’s hands slowly traveling up to bury his fingers in Jin’s messy hair.
Jasmine and strawberries…
He was going to drown in jasmine and strawberries.
But what a way to go…

When the second kiss finally ended, Kame giggled. Seriously. A real giggle. It was just, Jin was standing there with this dopey grin and Kame just couldn’t help himself. But when Jin tried to pull him in for yet a third kiss, Kame stopped him.
“You have to let me breathe a little, Jin! Are you afraid you’ll forget what I taste like?”
“Jasmine and strawberries…” Jin sighed dreamily.
Huh? “What are you talking about?”
“What do you mean?” Jin didn’t seem to realize he said something. At least he seemed to be coming out of his daze.
“Eh, nevermind.” Kame laughed and patted Jin on the cheek. “Nothing to worry about.”
“So…” Jin asked as he rinsed both his and Kame’s breakfast plate in the sink. “What are your plans for the day?”
“Well, last night I sent Takeshi and his brother to that grocery store. Wanatabe-san. You remember meeting him, right? Well, he called last night and said another drug dealer showed up. They’re supposed to go grab him and question him. I want to go, see what they found out. Figure out what to do from there.” Kame sighed. “I’m a bit at a loss over this whole thing. It’s got to be related to Junno’s robbery. I just don’t know. Do… do you want to come with me? Or, well, you can go do a job on your own, if you want some of your own money. I… I know everything you do with me will cut into the time you could spend making your money…”
Jin looked thoughtful. “Well, having money is nice. I don’t always… but I know I won’t starve and… I’d really rather go with you.”
But to Kame’s ears, he sounded hesitant. “What’s wrong?”
“Well, it’s just… you asked me a favor, didn’t you? You…” but it was like Jin suddenly realized they weren’t locked away somewhere private, because he caught himself and glanced around to make sure they were alone before he continued a bit more quietly, “You asked me to check on Kizuna, just in case. Introduce myself, chat, learn…”
Kame nodded. He had sort of forgotten about that. But he’d never admit that, especially to Jin!
“Shouldn’t… I do that? I’d rather go with you. This is important though, isn’t it?”
Gratitude swelled in his chest. Smiling softly, Kame said, “It is. You have no idea what this means to me, Jin.”
“I guess I’ll stay then. Introduce myself around, talk to people.” But he was pouting. It was cute.
“Alright, then. I’d better go do this. I want to be done with it, sooner rather than later. I’ll be back in a few hours!” and Kame turned to leave.
But he didn’t get more than a step away from Jin before he felt himself being pulled backward. He stumbled and fell back against Jin’s chest with a surprised yelp. “What the hell, Jin?!”
“Goodbye kiss!” Jin pouted. “Jinjin needs his goodbye kiss!”
Unbelievable. “How old are you, anyway?” Kame shook his head. But he turned in Jin’s arms and submitted finally.
Then they went their separate ways to do their separate tasks.
A couple of quick calls from the office phone confirmed they had succeeded at snatching up the man and had taken him to the storage unit to question him. He was being difficult but it wasn’t anything they couldn’t handle, Takeshi assured him.
Koki was still pretty moody over earlier as he drove Kame there. “You were seriously freaked out, Kame! You wouldn’t even let me near you! You were sobbing, for fuck’s sake! He’s lucky I didn’t shoot him. In fact, I haven’t ruled it out…” he grumbled.
“It was a misunderstanding, Koki.”
“Yeah, he seems to cause a lot of those…”
Kame sighed. “This time it was as much my fault as his. What I said, considering everything, was very easy to misinterpret. So then he said what he said and rather than asking him what he meant, I just assumed… I assumed he was leaving. But he wasn’t.”
“I know he’s good for you, Kame. I see that. I really do. The bits of you the rest of us can’t touch, they could heal…” And now it was Koki who sighed. “But when you’re crying, I forget that. I forget everything. I can’t stand to see you hurting.”
“I don’t like it much either,” Kame admitted with a laugh. “But now is not the moment to worry about those things. I need to focus on the task at hand.”
“Right. Well, you know I don’t like watching that stuff, so I’ll stay with the car, okay Boss-man?” Koki asked.
“Haven’t I told you that you don’t have to call me that?” was Kame’s response.
“And haven’t I told you I find it funny so I’m going to keep saying it?”
“You might have mentioned it…”
Koki laughed and Kame could hear it up until the moment the storage unit door closed behind him.

“So he used to live on the streets? Like, not squatting but the street-street?” Jin asked. Everyone knew so much more about Kame than he did. He didn’t like that. Kame was his boyfriend now (er… he was his boyfriend now, wasn’t he?) and he should know at least as much as everyone else. Normally he’d think it was best to ask Kame directly and he knew Kame would tell him if he did, but Kame was busy and this was as good a way as any to get a feel for Kizuna’s members.
Besides, after the stir the two of them had caused that morning, Kizuna was practically begging to dish on Kame and learn more about Jin.
“Yeah. The street-street. Pearl Street, some alley. Of course, that was after he ran away from home.” The one talking was a man named Tadayoshi Okura who had been with Kizuna for over a year.
“Ran away from home?” Living in an alley on Pearl Street probably meant he was a prostitute. Well, Jin had suspected that already. And he didn’t really need to know why Kame ran away from home, knowing what he did about Kame’s scars. But Kame said Kizuna didn’t know about them, so Jin was curious to know what the Kizuna members thought the reason was.
“Yeah. His dad pimped him out.” This was from… oh, what was it? Noriko something, right? Yeah, that was it. One of the thieves-in-training.
So that was what he told them. Well, it was true. He knew it was true, because Kame wouldn’t have lied about it. Not to them. No, he’d just left some stuff out. “So what happened? How’d he end up here from being homeless on Pearl Street?”
“Well, the way I heard it, he killed a client.” Noriko again.
Okura shook his head, saying, “No, it wasn’t a client. It was another one of the whores.”
“No, I’m pretty sure it was a client.”
“I’m telling you, it was…”
And then the two of them were arguing. Yurina’s voice cut through the whole mess from the doorway. It was cold. “It was a rapist bastard and that’s the only part that matters.”
Jin blinked. “Rapist?” So Kame killed someone that tried to rape him? Or did he step in to save someone else? Because, really, both were equally likely, considering it was Kame they were talking about.
“Yes.” But Yurina didn’t say anything else.
“So… he killed the guy and that got him off the street how?” Jin finally asked.
Yurina’s voice softened a bit, “He’d never killed anyone before. He couldn’t go back to his stroll and he couldn’t go home. So my brothers took him in and gave him a job. He lived with them for about a year and a half or so. Until Papa K got them arrested and burned The Club down. They’re still in jail…”
“Papa K again…” Jin sighed. “I swear, I’ll hand that man his bloody testicles one day. Don’t think I won’t.”
“I think every person here would like to see that happen,” Okura laughed.
“Anyway,” Yurina continued her story, “Kame keeps in touch with them. He stayed at our apartment after and when I was finally getting out of jail-”
“Why were you in jail?” Jin interrupted.
“That… bastard Kame killed, it was his doing. All you need to know.” Obviously Yurina didn’t want to talk about that. “Anyway, like I was saying, a little after Kame turned eighteen, when I was getting out of jail, my brother Aoi asked him to watch over me.”
The way her eyes sort of went dead for just the briefest moment which made Jin wonder if he’d imagined it but he was pretty sure he hadn’t. “I… I was his first rescue.”
