Kent Cooper was nervous.
Kent didn't get nervous, though! He was so used to being in control. Follow the rules and there are no surprises. Everything works out.
Except, of course, for the part where he was at the mercy of someone else.
He'd been planning this for weeks. It had to work out.
Kent had chosen traditional. The restaurant where they'd had their first date, the night of their three-year anniversary. He'd bought flowers -- not roses, she wasn't a fan of roses. Wildflowers.
It had to work out. He didn't know what he'd do if it didn't.
The drive to her house was a blur, he was so focused on his "mission." When he picked her up it was a bit clearer, the excited kiss shared when he presented the flowers and the hunt for a vase to put them in.
On the way to the restaurant, his stomach was in knots and he felt like he'd break down and spill before the perfect time.
He didn't make it to the end of dinner. He didn't even really make it to the middle. The wine was poured and he felt almost as though he would burst with anxiety. With a rather improper gulp from his wineglass, to steel his nerves, he cleared his throat and reached across the table to take her hand.
"Lyn, sweetheart --" he caught himself, chided himself for not having the right words in mind.
She looked at on, a happy smile on her face, love shining back at him through blue-green eyes.
"Hmm?" Lyn asked, tucking a lock of hair behind an ear with her free hand.
For a few moments he was just lost in her eyes, her smile. It reminded him why he was doing this. He wanted more than just dates and shared nights with this woman. He wanted forever with her.
"Happy Anniversary, honey," he started, trying to sort out the words in his mind. "It's been three years since I found the courage to ask the boss's granddaughter out on a date, and now... I hope I've still got some of that courage left." A breath. "I love you. I love how you laugh at the simplest things, how you find the good in everyone, how you don't let anything get you down for long."
Lyn's cheeks tinted pink.
"Kent, really, it's not necessary... it's only our anniversary!"
"No, Lyn," he corrected her as he stood and reached in his pocket. "I want it to be something better."
As he knelt down in front of her and presented the little black box to her, he continued.
"Lyndis Hassar, will you marry me?"
For a few moments, Lyn was silent, looking at the diamond ring nestled in black velvet. Kent's heart leapt into his throat as those moments drew longer and longer before-
"Yes!" came the emphatic reply, and Lyn was out of her seat and on the floor in front of Kent, hugging him tightly, pressing kisses on the dazed and worried man's face. It took another few seconds before Kent finally came back down to earth and drew her into a kiss, his heartbeat so loud that he was sure she could hear it over the applause in the restaurant.
Yes.
That was what he'd been hoping for, what he wanted to hear. At that moment, he couldn't think of a single better word in the world.
Yes.
