panda cookies and unicorn cakes ;;

“When I grow up, I’m going to make you my queen,” Luhan had declared to Yixing when he was at the ripe old age of ten and the younger boy nine.

And Yixing had simply stared at him with a blank look on his face and a dollop of whipped cream at the corner of his bottom lip. “What,” he said rather eloquently, remembering to swallow the cake in his mouth first - his mama had always told him that it was rude to speak with his mouth full. He hadn’t exactly understood the logic, but Yixing was never one to question or disobey his parents.“You’ve gone crazy I think.”

Luhan had frowned at that asked rather petulantly. “I am not crazy. And what’s wrong with wanting to make you my queen?”

“Because I’m a boy,” Yixing said matter-of-factly. Then he squints his eyes and points a finger in the older boy’s direction. “Have you seen a boy queen before?”

"No?"

“Aha!” Yixing had exclaimed excitedly. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is why I cannot be a queen and Xiao Lu has gone crazy!” He punctuates his sentence with a jump and a punch in the air.

Luhan said drily - an eyebrow raised, “You’ve been hanging around that Huang Zitao kid, haven’t you?”

“Maybe?” the younger boy shrugged. “What’s it to you anyways?”

“I do not like him,” Luhan crossed his arms, “You spend too much time playing with him.”

Yixing shrugged again. “That’s because I like him stupid. His mom gives me panda shaped cookies whenever I go over to his house.”

“They’re delicious,” he said with a toothy grin - as if that’s enough reason for him to like Zitao.

(And in a way it was, for the boy was terribly sweet-toothed and his ideal place to live in was a gingerbread house, like the one in Hansel and Gretel.)

Luhan sniffed. Pandas aren’t even his favorite animal. Wait just a minute..

A huge grin spread across his face as a light bulb went off. I have to ask daddy to check on the lighting system again, he thought wryly. That bulb has been going on and off for a few days now.

The younger boy peered at him curiously - head tilted slightly to one side, “Why are you smiling? Creepily, I might add.”

Luhan’s grin immediately vanished and was replaced by a pout. “Hey! You take that back. I do not look creepy.”

“But you do though! I’m speaking the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”

Yixing placed a hand on the older boy’s shoulder. “The truth hurts sometimes, Luhan,” he said sagely with an earnest expression on his face. “Live with it. May the force be with you, young padawan.”

“O..kay..” Luhan quirked an eyebrow. “Why are you going all star wars on me?”

“Don’t know. But anyways, why were you wearing that creepy smile?”

An exasperated sigh escaped Luhan. “You know Xing; I have this feeling that you’re making my life miserable on purpose.” He squints at the younger boy.

“Well, I’m your best friend so yes; I have to agree with your statement.”

He clings onto the elder’s arm and offered him a smile. “I still like you though. Don’t be sad okay?”

Luhan looked at him and poked his dimple.

“So if I told the kitchen people to bake you a humongous unicorn-shaped cake, will you stop going over to Huang Zitao’s house and come play with me instead?” he asked, hope blooming in his chest when his best friend’s eyes started to sparkle excitedly.

“I want it to be purple in color with chocolate filling and rainbow sprinkles!” Yixing jumps up and down, tugging Luhan’s arm in the process. “Please say yes Luhan, pleasepleaseplease!”

And Luhan had smiled triumphantly. Take that, Huang Zitao!

“You’ll stop going over to his house if I say yes?”

The younger boy stopped jumping and shrugged. “Sure okay. I’ll just play with him at school then.”

Luhan spluttered. No! I don’t want you to play with him!

“But Xiao Lu,” Yixing leaned forward till their noses bumped. “Why do you dislike Taozi so much? He hasn’t done anything wrong to you. He’s honestly a very nice boy once you get to know him.”

Oh, so it’s Taozi now is it?

“I have no intention to get to know someone who’s stealing my future queen from me, no matter how nice he is.”

Yixing pulled his arm away and scrunches his nose.

“You’re so weird,” he says. “I am a boy and will not be your queen because there are no boy queens.”

“Unless you build me a gingerbread house with your own hands,” he flashes his dimple at Luhan. “I’ll think about it then.”

And Luhan had parted his lips, all ready to agree when -

“Master Yixing, Mr. Lee is here for your guitar lesson,” an elderly lady called out from the living room.

“Coming!”

Yixing turned to the older boy and placed a quick peck on his cheek before running out of the room.

“I’ll see you in an hour and a half,” he shouted over his shoulder.

Luhan stares at his best friend’s retreating back for a few moments. I will make you my queen, Zhang Yixing. Just you wait.

He then walks out and calls out to a young man who was walking by.

“Kyungsoo, do we have any rainbow sprinkles in the kitchen?”

The young man blinked. “Rainbow sprinkles your highness? I don’t think so. Why?”

“Oh. Then could you ask the maids to get some as soon as possible?”

Kyungsoo smiled and nodded politely. “Anything else, Prince Luhan?”

Luhan placed his forefinger to his lips thoughtfully for a few seconds.

“Say Kyungsoo. Do you happen to know how to build a gingerbread house?”
