liver functions while pregnant?

I had all of my initial prenatal bloodwork done on Thursday, and yesterday the results were available to me on the web portal. My red blood count, mean platelet volume, and hematocrit were a tiny bit low, but what I'm actually concerned about were the results of the liver enzymes ( Read more... )

My liver enzymes were elevated (though I don't remember the numbers) as a result of gallbladder stones/disease but I was having pretty significant attacks at that point and my surgery was already scheduled postpartum. If you are having something that could be those symptoms it's worth getting checked out.

I had my gallbladder removed in January 2009, less than two months after I had my first baby. I wonder if NOT having a gallbladder would affect the enzyme levels.

Thanks!

I wonder if it does, especially since it has to do with processing bile. I hope you figure it out!

I would guess that it shouldn't influence the liver encymes, since the gallbladder just stores the bile that is produced in the liver - nothing else. However, if OP had her gallbladder removed due to cholelithiasis (stones), it might theoretically be possible to have a stone in one of the remaining ducts. I'm not sure if it'd be painless then, though.

And how weird for patients to get lab results sooner than the doctor. Labs availibility on a webportal is totally unknown to me (might just be unpopular in Germany).

Make sure that the lab is using the same values as the results you're finding online. Some labs use a different number system. For example, my grandmother is in stage V kidney failure. Her doctor uses an eGFR to monitor her kidney function, but when she's in the hospital, they have a whole different numbering system so the eGFR her doctor has and the one the hospital has are different values.
