Induction and Food

So I'm being induced tomorrow night (pitocin drip) if bubs doesn't start to make an appearance on his own. Even though all signs are pointing toward labor (I've started to dilate, am about 70-80% effaced, lost my mucus plug, and also had a little cramping on and off for about a week) I just really think this bugger is comfortable in there and won't ( Read more... )

Protein and complex carbohydrates for energy. Is there a medical reason that they're inducing you so soon? It sounds like if they gave you a few more days you'd go into labour on your own.

I should have clarified, I have pregnancy induced hypertension. I had a blood pressure spike just a few weeks ago, had all the tests and luckily no preeclampsia. Since then I've had a bio physical profile and non-stress test every week which have all turned out fine, so the doctor was willing to let me go to forty weeks (and get us through Easter as husband is a Presbyterian pastor). Although I've had elevated blood pressure since the middle of my second trimester, induction wasn't on the radar until this recent spike (where they also upped the medication).

Ahhh, fair enough. That makes sense. Hopefully it'll start soon before you need the induction then.

I will definitely look for something with that kind of long lasting energy impact from complex carbs and protein, so good suggestion. Tonight will be a pretty protein rich meal with oven roasted turkey, maybe I can figure out something lighter for tomorrow with leftovers.

I also know sometimes foods rich in those things can sit heavy in my stomach and take awhile to digest for me, particularly now this late in pregnancy. I would like to avoid revisiting my food as much as possible during labor, lol.

I ate creamy peanut butter on a spoon until the last possible moment. It was definitely nourishing but easy and smooth. I did end up getting sick while pushing, but that's pretty normal no matter what you've eaten, and as far as all that goes, it was a good choice of a food to have eaten. ;) Good luck and I am sending you good wishes.

I got induced with my second and barfed all over the place, so I have no idea what to eat. I ate something stupid though...like McDonald's or something that was so a bad choice in retrospect....so my only advice is make a better choice than me! :p

My induction was very positive. They started the pitocin around 8 p.m. and I basically just sat around and watched TV (and threw up...don't forget that!). The contractions got super nasty and intense (WAAAAYYY more intense than my first which was a totally natural delivery) and I ended up getting an epidural when I was dilated to 8. After that, I just sat around some more, then about 2 a.m my doctor showed up and said it was time to push. Had a baby by like 2:30.

I wanted the natural labor and I did it with my first and don't get me wrong, it was cool. But part of my also really, really liked the induction/epidural route. I knew exactly when she was coming, I was ready, I got the pictures I wanted because I wasn't in massive pain.

Good luck, I hope it goes well for you!

Peanut butter with apples was my go-to before I had to go to the hospital. Fiber and protein. It's also always been my favorite pre-workout food for years before so it was something I thought of right away.

This is one of my favorite current snacks, and the apples we got the other day were really good, when they've been bleh all winter. Thanks for the great suggestion!

Honestly... you'll likely throw up during labor anyway so you should probably eat what you feel like.

But-- my doula advised oatmeal and yogurt, so I ate that during earlier labor.

During intense labor I actually had pizza because I felt like pizza. It was the best tasting pizza I have ever had. LOL

I threw up while I was in labor and I still can't eat that food or even think about eating that food without having unpleasant thoughts... so maybe something that you don't like *too* much. lol

or maybe it's just my vomit-phobia that has caused this!
