3rd baby, overdue by a few days so far. Baby is posterior, not engaged (however is bobbing up and down on the rim, if you will) no dilation or effacement at all. I am hoping for my 3rd homebirth but after a really horendous visit with the hospital today for something unrelated that resulted in being told to prepare for a c-section due to all of the ( Read more... )

That's crazy. There's no reason to "prepare for a c-section" especially if this is your 3rd baby. You can go from 0 to baby in a manner of hours. Ignore them and don't let them get to you. Hospitals are prepared for c-sections...doesn't mean you have to be.

Don't lose all hope! I had a (medically indicated due to hypertension) induction with my second, at 38w 0d. Bub wasn't even slightly engaged, was posterior, and I wasn't dilated or effaced. My obstetrician broke my waters, and my baby switched to a lovely anterior position, and I delivered naturally an hour and a half later. It can be done!

I have gone overdue with my last 3 kids and have never been checked for dilation or effacement.. which means I have no idea if I was dilated or effaced by my due date or a week after. I might have been, I might not have been.

there's no reason for the baby to be engaged before labor starts. in fact, with a posterior baby, be happy he's not! you're looking at a better chance of turning him. stay on hands and knees as much as possible from now until birth. never slump back into a chair.. make sure your knees are lower than (or level with) your hips at all times when you sit, and and arch your back towards the baby a bit. when you're not on hands and knees. ;) my last baby was posterior the day before she was born (at 41+4) and I spent the day on hands and knees. she was born the next morning perfectly positioned.

A friend of mine just home birthed her third in a few hours. He was born posterior and she did not know until he came out. No back labor whatsoever. Your body and baby know what they are doing!

It's as though doctors are looking for reasons to perform c-sections. When I delivered my son I was the only mother at the hospital that didn't have one and I think me voicing my determination against it is what allowed me to birth vaginally. They definitely tried to prepare me by telling me a 9 lb baby is too large to deliver naturally. Trust yourself. You've already done this multiple times. You are perfectly capable to do it again.
