Chicken Pox

Remind me, as I completely forget, but I was just informed that I was exposed to the chicken pox virus on Wednesday. Two of my son's playgroup friends came down with it, and we were all together on Wednesday. I have had chicken pox when I was a kid already. Is it bad or dangerous that I was exposed, or am I fine since I've already had it? I ( Read more... )

I actually had reason to ask my midwife about this three weeks ago. Your childhood exposure and therefore immunity protects the baby. You're fine.

Just to further set your mind at ease, even if you DID develop chicken pox, there's only about a 1.5 or 2% chance of it hurting the baby. And the biggest risk is during 8 to 20 weeks. Unfortunately I know this because I never had chicken pox (that I know of) and never was vaccinated, so it does kind of worry me. However, it seems pretty rare to have complications.

I should add that since you had chicken pox already it's pretty much impossible for you to get it, so you are totally in the clear. Those further stats were just for extra reassurance but they don't even apply to you, since I'm sure you're 100% safe. =)

you should have been tested for viral titters with your first pregnancy and maybe even this one. if you have protection your fetus does. ;)
