Calcium spot on sonogram

Feb 29, 2012 11:37

I had my level II sonogram today and the lady kept going back to look at the heart. She told me the baby had a calcium spot and that it was nothing and told me "It's a mole on your skin, it's not going to cause any defects". I stupidly googled calcium spot and I'm getting all these "soft markers for downsydome posts ( Read more... )

Typically, you have multiple markers for risk. One is pretty meaningless.

This.

I got told as long as the spot isn't as bright as bone on the ultrasound that it typically will just resolve itself and go away.
My son had a 'bright spot' in his heart at the 20 week scan (that I didn't figure out until I got sent to the perinatologist. That was an emotional day). Had a second US at 22 weeks at the specialist, saw it was still there but not as bright. Third US and it had faded even more, and it was gone by about 30 weeks.

Little guy is eight and a half months now, and has a completely normal heart.

And because I should know better than to post on lj with a flailing kiddo in my lap, my son doesn't have downs syndrome either.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you momma, I'm sorry things are stressful for you.

I couldn't imagine that! I don't think the lady would of told me if it wasn't for me asking if everything was alright. I just thought it was weird that she kept going back to the heart. Her response was so non-shalon until I looked it up and saw the whole soft marker response.

So happy to hear that your son is perfectly healthy. I swear google should be banned from the internet, sometimes. :/

Yeah, typically with the soft markers you need to have multiple ones for them to mean anything. Creating a life is really damn complicated and little hiccups are bound to happen, but they don't necessarily mean anything is wrong. I'm sure that once they saw the calcium spot they looked for all of the other standard markers, and they would have had to mention if anything else was weird.
I got weird news at my ultrasound about the cord missing an artery. I left with my mind racing, went home and googled (yep, bad idea) and spent the next 24 hours freaking out with hubby. I called my midwives the next day and got clarification. So, if you're nervous or have questions, call your doc. They should be able to give you more info over the phone, which can help you form other questions before your appointment.

If that is the only marker, don't worry so much. I had to go for extra ultrasounds for that reason, but my daughter also had a cyst on her brain and clenched fists. Two weeks after the initial one, there were no clenched fists and no cyst, but the heart issue was still there. A few weeks later, I was at a high risk clinic in the city (90 minute drive from here) to have another ultrasound done by an actual doctor, not a radiology or ultrasound tech. This one the doctor could not find the spot on the heart and she looked healthy anyway. He said we had three options - amniocentesis, which he didn't want to do and at that point for fear of sending me home and having me go into preterm labour, late abort or just ride the wave until the end of pregnancy. We are very "it is what it is" and take it as it comes, and we have Down Syndrome in the family, so we were prepared for the possibility.

She turns five in two days. She's perfectly healthy. :) Don't freak out too much. It will probably go away on it's own in a matter of a month.

Good!! It's HARD with something like this. There is so much uncertainty and the fact of having to wait for usually another 20 weeks or so before seeing the little munchkin can be really hard. Good luck - but hopefully you don't need the luck. :)

I know! 22 weeks left for me but all the positive feedback helps and I'm sure my doctor will be able to comfort me on Friday, just such a long wait. :/

Thank you again. <3

They found a spot on my baby's heart at the 20 week - I was referred to a specialist who looked for other markers and found none. Brenner (and his twin brother) were born perfectly healthy and no sign of Down Syndrome. The ultrasound tech at the high-risk place (I was high-risk anyway b/c of the twins, don't worry!) told me that with the increasing sensitivity of ultrasound machines and the fear of doctor liability, they are seeing more of these spots and *have* to report them to the mother to cover the doctor's tail. Apparently OBGYNs have the highest rate of malpractice suits and have a lot of anxiety over liability in these cases. She also told me ten years ago they wouldn't even mention it to a mother because it isn't really anything to worry about. Try not to stress and enjoy your pregnancy. Did they refer you to someone to check for other markers?
