i started here: http://www.clothnappytree.com/infos.php and http://www.clothnappytree.com/infos.php

my LO is due in 5 weeks and we going to be using prefolds and covers. we have a few pockets that we got as hand-me-downs (bumgenius3.0) which my husband or MIL will probably use more often.

check out www.diaperpin.com for reviews of types of diapers.

Most everyone has already answered your questions, but as for scraping of poop...you are supposed to do that with disposables but no one does.

My 7 1/2 month old is CD and I have yet to have to scrape poop off. We're doing BLW for solids and his intake isn't enough yet to have to scrape. I also made some fleece liners to lay in his diapers when we do get to that so I just lift that off and shake into the toilet.

My electric bill and water bill have not gone up at all. We don't get diaper rash. Research the different types...there are one size and sized diapers.

Thank you for pointing out that those of us that use disposables should be scraping the poop too! I've been shaking/scraping out poo for 5+ years now and some of my friends think I'm crazy.

I have to admit, when my first was in disposables, I never did!

Scrape poop off disposables? I've never heard of this! What would the point be if it all goes in the trash anyway...?

I'm due in July with my first, and have been researching cloth for a few weeks. I've found really helpful videos on youtube, including this one:

I am not anticipating my electricity bill, or water bill, to rise due to cloth diapers alone; I do expect it to rise because of extra laundry all-around due to having an extra person in the household. Things can get messy with babies, obviously, due to all sorts of bodily fluids, so our usual 3 loads of laundry per week will probably grow to 5-6 loads.

I guess i should point out that the above video shows various cloth diapers with bowel movements being emptied into a toilet. if that's not your thing, then don't watch!!! :)

This is a brilliant video, thank you. I've been wondering how this works! (And I hope to use it to convince DH that, YES, we're CDing eventually. ;))

I didn't cloth diaper, but I scraped poop of the disposables, as I thought it was gross for it to sit and ferment in a trash can. I washed my hands afterwards and it was fine.

I wipe off the poop with toilet tissue. It's no more gross than wiping my own butt.

With #1 I used disposables and he pretty much constantly had nappy rash. I use cloth nappies with #2, he's 12 weeks old and has never had it despite being a very heavy wetter.

You can buy lots of different kinds. I used prefolds with wraps when my son was a newborn. You
