1. Congrats on your daughter! Sorry your going through this right now.

2. Try a sitz bath (20 minutes three times a day if you can) then after try sitting on an ice pack, I read that alternating hot and cold helps with inflammation and helps get the blood moving.

3. Try ibuprofen or acetaminophen, though ibuprofen is probably better but if you are nursing i'd consult the doctor.

4. Even if you try these methods call your doctor anyhow or go to the emergency room.

As for surgery I dont think its a major surgery if im not mistaken they inject a local anesthetic and squeeze out the contents. Now there is a hemorrhoidectomy which is a major surgery but I think that depends on the severity of the issue.

Good luck!

Ibuprofen is definitely better because it will take down swelling, and it is perfectly fine for nursing. I was on 800 mg every 8 hours in the hospital and 600 mg every 6 hours when I was released.

Sympathies! Try milk of magnesia and Miralax to help you move your bowels. They helped me more than Colace.

yikes I am just cringing reading this. Had bad stitches with my first, and bad hemorrhoids with my 2nd... It didn't hurt too bad to poop with my 2nd, but with my first I thought I was dying. I bit my hand to distract myself from the pain on the other end.

My only advice is to try to go if you can before it gets worse. Try pear juice, prunes etc. Those always helped me out more than medicine... colace will only soften things, peri-colace helps you go (not sure if it is approved).

Prunes help a lot.

Prunes and prune juice were life saving when I had my daughter! They are magic! Colace didn't seem to do much for me but as soon as I started on regular doses of prune juice, I was fine!

And OP, I used to soak cotton balls with witch hazel and wedge them in between my cheeks (TMI, right?) and I would replace them every few hours. I kept the witch hazel in the refrigerator too, which I found made things more soothing.

I had a thrombosed hemorrhoid and went to the ER just a few weeks ago. Best thing I ever did - I was up all night crying in pain and finally got some relief once they lacerated it. Witch hazel, ice packs, etc did absolutely nothing for me, this was the only thing that helped.

I got a new pregnancy book (about being vegan and pregnant) and one thing it recommended was to buy large soft maxi pads, spray them with witch hazel, and then freeze them.
