I hate Huggies. They are the only brand that my son has leaked out of and they tend to run small (in my opinion). Honestly, I use either Target or Walmart generic brands of diapers and they're fantastic.

My apartment complex costs the same as yours for laundry, but the washers are tiny. I probably would have tried cloth diapering if I had my own washer/dryer. As for right now, it's too much of a hassle. I have a hard enough time getting quarters for the laundry we do now.

Yea if we had a house I'd def be cloth diapering for sure. That's why I'm curious to see if having a big washer and drying like we do would make a difference. I mean, I'd still have to carry them up and down the stairs and what not, but whatever, if it saves money I'd do it. (Our machines run on cards. I hate the fact that we can only put money on them when the office is open. Why not have a money loading machine in the w&d rooms?)

Thanks for the info about Huggies I'll have to go on my registry and switch them out! The generic are probably even cheaper and! (as you stated) work better to!

If you do the maths, its much more economical (and environment friendly) to use cloth. I can't speak for the US prices, but I doubt there would be such a drastic difference that it would swing the other way.
A baby uses between 6-10 nappies a day, prices here are between 16p-20p per nappy if you get the big boxes. so minimum of £6.72 a week and max of £14. Obviosuly convert that to dollars but you can see that over time the cost of the clothes and the washing is much much cheaper.

A box of diapers (which lasts about a week) is $25.

$25 is only 8 loads a week (right now we do about 2-3). I've heard of women doing 2 loads a day after having a child and using cloth. That's 14 loads which = $42 a week just for laundry. Am I going to be doing at least a load a day anyway?

Like I said that's what I've heard and I'm trying to find out if that's like the going rate or if those women just have really teeeeeeny washers and dryers! lol.

I'd reckon on it being more like a load every other day given the size you mentioned the washers are. hmm, one wash a day though would be just on the wrong side of more expensive, if your budget can take the extra $3-5 a week and you really want cloth I'd go for it, but if its the deciding factor then I guess you have to make the choice based on those figures.

I could handle a load a day, that's still only $21, maybe $24 if I have to do 2 loads one day a week. I guess I wouldn't mind it costing the same because then we we do get a house (hopefully within the next year or so) we'll already have the cloth diapers! :)

I think they just take really long to approve--took weeks for me, and friends have said the same. You'll probably get it; I think they are just a bit slow :).

I'm still deciding this time around as well, but occasionally ended up with Huggies for my daughter. I didn't hate them, but I'm pretty sure they have bigger leg holes? They were more likely to leak when she was younger, but not so much when she got older. She's a skinny little thing; I've heard better things from people with chubbier babies, so it might be a size-of-the-kid thing with those.

I've actually had fantastic luck with some store brands. Some not so much (one had such stretchy tabs they were useless!) but some have been amazing. It might still be worth experimenting with those after all--they can cost half as much as the premiums. If there's no luck, then you can figure out what premium works best, but I'd stay away from Luvs--they are artificially scented and it is so gross.

I've heard horrible things about Luvs as well!

Great to know about the leg holes, maybe I'll look into those off brands, hey I don't wear GAP or Hollister, wth do I care if my baby is in equate/great value!? Absolutely not at all! If it gets the job done, who cares!? lol :)

I think either way we'd probably have disposables on hand for traveling, so thank you for the helpful info!

cloth is definitely cheaper. the cheapest route to go with prefolds + covers (about 2 dozen prefolds in each size, 4 covers in each size, and 4 soaker pads in each size). i'm a FTM due really any day now but i have family that CD's and gave me advice. I got everything i need for birth through potty training for $146. From what i understand, a month of disposables is about $70 ( ... )

OMG! You just made me the most excited person EVER! I've heard of portable dishwashers (my parents had one), but never in all my years did I even know that portable washers even EXISTED! This is seriously amazing! Dude.. Like this would save us so much money and then I wouldn't have to wait for payday to do laundry... and I could use Cloth!!! YAYYYY!

oh did I mention seriously love you!? ;D

lol! you're very welcome!

also, a sidenote about portable washers... because they're so tall and skinny, it's something you dont want to turn on then leave alone while you go to the grocery store. be sure to be home during its entire cycle. mine liked to wobble a bit and if it wobbled too much, it would leak soapy water. if i was home to catch this, it was an easy fix of just reaching inside and evening out the clothes a bit. then again, for all i know this might not be a problem any more. i got my washer as a hand-me-down from my sister and she got it in 2002. i'm sure they've changed over the last 9 years.

Makes sense, they're just a smaller version of an upright so it'd make sense that they'd act the same! lol

I'm prbly going to be a FTM as well, so this wouldn't be a problem :)

my sister found it to be cheaper to use a laundry service for her daughters cloth diapers. maybe look into that?
