After my first daughter I ate well, breastfed, danced multiple times a week, and hiked while wearing my daughter and it *still* took 17 months to get back to pre-pregnancy weight. My body however completely changed so even though I weighed the same, I had to dump a lot of clothes for being too small and ill fitting. I have lowered my expectations this time since I learned that expecting to be fully back in 6 weeks is ridiculous and cruel. And everything you've read on the internet... most of it is lies or a few VERY lucky (or exaggerating) women.

It is totally common!
it took 9 months to grow, so 5 weeks is not that long!
be kind to yourself and your body!
*hugs*

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - I definitely feel a bit better.

I will try to be patient with myself and let nature take its course :)

My friend is your height, but not as thin (about 140 prepregnancy) and she's pretty curvy, but she also still looks pregnant. She's about 12 weeks out and only looking a little pregnant at this point, but in the month or so after I would've guessed her at 6-7 mo.

The problem is that your abdominal muscles have weakened. Dieting won't fix something like that. They'll tighten up over time and more so with exercise. Your body is also going to hold onto some weight so long as you are breastfeeding (though I'd expect that more in the upper arms/chest, not the stomach). Also bear in mind that your uterus doesn't shrink down overnight and on a smaller person it may be much more noticeable.
