i'm also interested in this post--- i was thinking, do they have launder services in your area for diapers?

(eg where you pay $x for them to pick up a pail of dirty diapers every day or two & drop off clean ones in return)

Yes (think it might be more like once a week that they pick up and drop off), there is this company http://www.sddiaperservice.com/
and this one:
http://www.beachbumsdiapers.com/

BUT, I don't know whether people like using the type of diaper that this service uses (cotton prefolds with covers, I think), OR whether ~20$ a week is affordable (when I could wash do my own diapers for probably closer to $10 a week - but I have to have the time - and own the diapers and/or covers)

you know what my other question along these lines was... i don't know alot about how you launder cloth diapers, but I've seen one youtube video (here: http://www.youtube.com/user/xxxjoelpolexxx#p/search/28/cenErxNvwIs) where they run a hot rinse followed by regular cycle to get it clean... things that you can't usually do with shared facilities...

I don't know if you've already checked out clothdiapering but if you haven't, you should swing on by that way.

Thanks! I didn't know it existed. I'll definitely check it out.

Ok, I'm sure someone on here is already cloth diapering and can answer this stuff better than I can, but here's some of the research I've been doing so far ( ... )

Oh, plus if you have access to shared laundry facilities, you probably have more than one machine, right? From what I understand, life with a baby means more laundry in general, and with shared facilities you can do more than one load at a time! So there's a bonus.

Yes, that's true. We can use more than one machine at a time. Also, we live in graduate housing and our apt. is ground floor, and the laundry facilities are a couple of buildings down, and we don't have to carry laundry up or down stairs to do it. Plus, our apt is a little small to accommodate a portable washer (I don't even know where all the baby stuff is going to go!) It's seeming like washing our own diapers will be worth it, I guess I just have to figure out what kind of diapers to get.

Ugh, yeah I hear you on the small apartment...I have no idea where we'll find the room for a portable washer if we decide to go that route.

I've heard good things about bummis, bumgenius, fuzzibuns, applecheeks and rumparoos, for whatever it's worth.

I second the cloth diapering community =]

I use prefolds and covers, mostly because it was cheap to get my initial stash, but also because prefolds are ridiculously durable and easy to take care of. There is a bit of a learning curve involved in folding them, but it's not that difficult once you get the hang of it =]

We did this too. The other thing I like about prefolds is that clean ones can get used as an impromptu changing surface, burp cloths, etc. They're more flexible than the other types (we tried an all-in-one and pocket diaper). My mom was still washing the car with my old prefolds when I was in college!

Oh yes, they are definitely useful for things other than diapers (I always keep one under my little one's head while she's sleeping, so she doesn't spit up on my sheets!). I also like the fact that they dry fast, which is perfect for living in an apartment because I can hang them to dry instead of paying $2 for a dryer cycle.

http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com

is where I've ordered all of my stuff from and the lady who runs it has been very helpful; it's a great place to shop.

I use the cotton prefolds -- unpinned, and simply folded into thirds and placed in a snappy cover. I really like Mommy's Touch. No pins or itchy velcro, just snaps! They're the bomb!!

If you're going bare bones, I'd maybe get 2-3 dozen newborn size prefolds and 5-6 covers.

It's ok to be overwhelmed with cloth, though. I used sposies for the first 6 weeks and slowly transferred to using cloth.
