I wonder if this post is allowed...if not, mods, please remove and sorry!

My husband and I are looking to buy a digital camera to take pictures of our little one when she arrives. Right now we use our phones exclusively and so our photographs aren't the best. This is probably an irrational pregnancy/nesting thing, but for some reason having a good ( Read more... )

i wouldn't recommend buying a DSLR (like the canon rebels) when you aren't very familiar with cameras. also, T1i is more in the $800+ range hehe ( ... )

You honestly cannot go wrong with a Sony cybershot. Great pics and videos, in your price range - you'll love it.
Ps yay for the well behaved cervix.

This. My SO went to school for photography and when I asked for a camera for Christmas he got me a Cybershot.

Not too long ago we bought new cameras - a Nikon D3100 and a Canon Powershot (can't remember exact model #). I really like the Nikon but you do need to know how to use cameras (and it's up in the price range of the Canon T1), and we're still pretty novice at it so I know our pictures aren't where they can be. I absolutely love the Canon Powershot, it has image stabilization so I can take a picture and it very rarely comes out blurry, plus it's super simple and only cost about $250 (I got it from Staples for just over $200 on sale though). I also have a Powershot for use at work and love it way more than my Nikon CoolPix camera.

I like my Sony point and shoot camera. It's simple, takes decent pictures, and even has a video option. There's several models, but they typically run $100-$200. It's good for basic use.

The one that I would LIKE to buy, which is a bit more complicated but WAAAAAAAY better picture quality without being a D-SLR is the Canon G12. It is $500 at Best Buy, haven't researched it elsewhere yet, but I like the fact that Best Buy has accidental damage plans.

A couple random tips on picking a camera. No matter what you go with, don't worry much about megapixels. They aren't really what matter. A 4.0 megapixel camera can print a 4x6 photo easily. More important is the lens and the internal sensor. If the sensor is crap, you will get grainy dark photos. If the lens is crap, they will be less focused (aka blurry).

I love my Canon Powershot. It's an upper-range point and shoot and it takes GREAT pictures. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SX130IS-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003ZSHNG8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I took these pictures with it:

Second vote for Canon Powershot! I'd advise Canon or Nikon, with Sony close behind. Avoid Fuji like the plague.
