I ran out of test strips and I'm worried my blood sugar is high. I want to take an extra pill to be safe but if it's not high I don't want to make it low.

My only symptoms are that I feel like I'm having hot flashes but I'm not sweating and I'm feeling really thirsty.

What do you think???

Thanks in advance!!!

overheating, thirst

I don't know how blood sugar works, but do you have a nurse line or someone to page that you can ask?

Well I ended up taking a pill anyways just in case, and if it gets low I'll have 2 twizzlers or something. Thank you for responding.

I know you already took care of the problem, but there are usually ways to get more without actually seeing your doc. I'm a type 1 and I've run out several times in the last 17 years of dealing with it. Just a few weeks ago I ran out and would have to wait a week to get more through my wonderful mail order company. I called my insurance company and explained the situation, then called my doctor to have her fax over a prescription for a week's worth of test strips. I've also run out in the middle of the night (I work third shift) and I've sucked it up and bought some, since you don't need a prescription, they're just really friggin expensive. My doc also told me if I ever run out I can get a "free sample" from her, if it's just for a day or two.

Hopefully you don't have to play guess the blood sugar again. It really does suck and can be kind of nerve wrecking, especially while preggo.

Yeah I was really worried =/. I called the pharmacy and they can give it to me tomorrow at the earliest thank God. I didn't know you could buy them at the store, but I live in Okinawa so maybe they are harder to find I don't know. Thank you for your help! :)

Do you by any chance take Glyburide, and if so do you know if there's a such thing as taking too many? I'm supposed to take 10mg a day but sometimes I take 15mg.

No I'm a type 1 so it's nothing but insulin for me. I don't know a TON about the different meds that type 2's take but I'm pretty sure there is a such thing as taking too much. My grandmother is a type 2 (I don't know what she's all on) and she's gotten her pills mixed up and ended up going low from it. As long as you know the symptoms of being low though, and you actually feel the lows (for some reason now that I'm pregnant I don't feel a low until I'm dangerously low) you should be fine, especially since you'll probably get more test strips tomorrow.

Oh and I don't know how things work in Japan... I just know that in the US you can buy them over the counter without a prescription. Sometimes they keep them behind the counter and you have to ask, but I'm sure things are different over seas.

Here's how it breaks down - hot, thirsty, tired, peeing a lot, hungry = high blood sugar. Dizzy, confusion, sweats, shaking, tired = low blood sugar.

I"m not sure if it's anything the same where you are, but since I don't have any sort of insurance, the Canandian Diabetes Association reimburses me for my supplies up to 75%. Those stupid test strips are EXPENSIVE !! All I need to do is get an offical receipt (not just the register tape) and I mail it to them.

When in doubt, go for a walk if you think your sugar is high.
It's much easier to control than a pill it. You can feel the change in yourself as you are walking. Even a short 15 minute walk will burn off excess sugar.

I've been dealing with this since way before pregnancy. I know what I'm talking about.

Good luck!
