Sadly in the case of a healthy momma with no history, I think thats pretty much a personal prefrance question. I personally would not have one unless there was a HUGE need for it. The thought of being one in 200 who lose their pregnancy scares me enough
I wouldn't do it unless I had results from the first trimester screening that indicated a high likelihood of a chromosomal abnormality AND knowing for certain would make a difference in how I would go forward with the pregnancy.
Doc suggested I have one at about 20 weeks because DF and I have histories of cystic fibrosis in our families. They couldn't get me in to have the procedure done until I was 23 weeks, and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. I wouldn't have terminated the pregnancy even if he had cystic fibrosis, so I chose not to have the amnio. The idea irked me that I could be the 1/200 for no real reasons.
I would have an amnio if I had bad results to the screenings, but otherwise definitely not. 1/200 amnios result in miscarriage. That number is too high for me.

Not pleasant, but not the end of the world, felt no ill effects.
