It's SO CLOSE!

My appt went fine yesterday. They said since I've (STILL!) not had a single labor sign that I need to walk as much as humanly possible to try & get labor started. If I don't have the baby before, I go to the hospital Aug 14 where they'll check if I'm dialated enough to start & if not, they'll put some kinda gel on my cervix & schedule an induction ( Read more... )

they'll check if I'm dialated enough to start & if not, they'll put some kinda gel on my cervix & schedule an induction within the few days after

Just so you know - that gel is the *start* of an induction.

I am going to sit over here and sigh over how your doctors say that you need to get the ball rolling since you "still" haven't had a labor sign (uh, doesn't that happen when you go into labor?) when you're only 40 weeks pregnant and the average pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks.

Since it's best for you to try to avoid an induction, walking is a good thing, but certainly don't wear yourself out by not taking breaks. Sex might help move things along as well. There are all sorts of things you can do to encourage things, though encouragement or induction or not, baby will come out when he/she is ready.

I'm probably gonna ask for an epidural. But I definitely would rather NOT have a c-section if I can avoid it. I've read that inductions increase risk of them & I told my grandma about that & she doesn't seem to think that's the case cause she knows no one who's induction ended in c-section. Pfft. Anyway, I'm definitely trying to read up on this stuff! Any links you can offer I'd really appreciate it!

Hi. I'm a c-section baby as the result of a failed induction. :)

Induction doubles your risk of a c-section, as a first-time mother. I would avoid it unless absolutely medically necessary. As others mentioned, consenting to various types of monitoring can keep your care provider (and you) happy that your baby is doing well until you naturally go into labor.

P.S: that website also has a link off to the left that discusses the risks of epidurals, which also increase your risk of a c-section. I suggest you read it.

Good luck mama, your baby WILL decide to come out on it's own!!

if you are uncomfortable with it there is most likely a reason! start to listen to your instincts and trust yourself - very shortly you'll be needing to rely on them a whole lot!

A bio-phyiscal profile can also keep them off your back. That will measure amniotic fluid and rate the placenta function. If you do opt to do them, it would be best to thoroughly research the test (how it works and how to interpret the results) so they can't pull one over on you, i.e., tell you baby is in grave danger when results are in acceptable parameters.

exactly - "low fluid" is a common excuse for inductions when the level is actually totally acceptable.
To the OP: Also - if you are getting a fluid level check make sure that you chug water the day before/of the test just to make sure that your levels are "high" enough...

You can make sperm-pops, so to speak, lol. It's the prostaglandins in semen that ripen the cervix. So if the actual sex itself is painful... just make sure you at least get the "deposit."

have him jerk into an ice tray. Freeze. Insert. :)

That's what I hear, anyway - sex is still possible for DH and me so I get my deposit from the tap, if you catch my drift. :)
