That was my thought but a) if doing both will stop immediate itching and the long-term stuff, I'd rather do them both and b) I'm not sure which would be better to choose first- on the one hand there's the instant gratification of the cream and on the other the pill will need time to kick in and therefore should be taken soon.
Or maybe I just can't think straight will all the itching, lol!
Personally, I like using the least amount of medication possible. However, I don't think I'd hesitate to do the "double dose" if the doctor okay'd it and I was suffering enough. I'd probably start with the cream and see how I felt as the night progressed. Benadryl seems pretty tame to me. I haven't done any research on it though.
I am having the same itching problem & using both & still itch. Topical benadryill has not helped me much but Aveno anti itch stuff as well as calamine & cortisone are helping.
I get really bad exzema on my hands and it got really nasty when I was first pregnant with my second daughter. My midwife had me wait until the second trimester before giving me a prescription for hydrocortisone cream. She said outside of the first trimester, it's perfectly safe to use as directed (like 3-4 times daily).
My thinking is that if your doctor told you this was ok, it's probably fine but if you're worried, call and check. Double dosing once tonight and maybe again tomorrow before reaching your doc isn't going to hurt anything.
I have no advice about the Benadryl but I do want to recommend Tea Tree Oil (topically only!) for the itch. I use it for bug bites and it works much better then witch hazel imho. Hope that helps!

you can always take the meds orally and try oatmeal baths if you are really worried.
