Cloth diaper pails: need a real answer about smell

Here's the deal: my husband and I live in an apartment. The building has 14 units and 1 washer/1 drier, we pay by the load. After the first couple of months we will both be working full time--a schedule that makes it a challenge to stay on top of our current laundry needs. The closest laundromat is nearly a mile away and my husband doesn't drive. ( Read more... )

I'd definately ask before you use bleach, because bleach tends to break cloth down very quickly.
Anyways, I don't have experiences yet, in all honesty. The pail we registered for though is plastic. I think that *might* become an issue. My friend has a metal pail with the step to open the lid, and when I was watching her little boy that thing was FULL. I put a diaper in it and when I opened it it really didn't smell too bad. I'd say there were at least 2-3 days worth in there. (I know that's not much of a help.)
Anyways, they diaper service may be okay with you sprinkling some baking soda in on the diapers once in awhile, and that would help absorb some of the odor. I've also seen wetbags that have a little pocket where you can insert essential oils to help combat the smell. (You could possibly just somehow attatch a sachet that you spray some oil on to the top inside of the lid of your can.)

They did say baking soda is ok, but I wonder how effective that really would be as I haven't had much luck with that in the past for other odors (like litter box).

Air is your friend. Do NOT shut the lid. We used a diaper service for 5 months and the only time we had a problem with stink was when my husband insisted we keep the lid shut.

Some services will provide you with a spray you can use in the pail to keep odors to a minimum. You could also ask if you can sprinkle the diapers with baking soda- that helps too :)

That sounds really good in theory, but I fear we'd have a right mess when the cats knock the thing over. And yeah, they'll find a way, the beasties.

we are with happy nappy and our pail dosent stink. its 3 feet from our stove and 2 from the fridge. we go through 3 wet bags a week and just put the full bags in our storge room. the wet bags keep the smell in and stink out. our pail has a charcole puck on it and is fantastic. im just on my blackberry out and about but if u want to see a pic of our set up let me know and i can post one

i don't have personal experience with it as a parent, but i do remember as a kid my mom got a diaper service when my sister was born (i was 6/7) and i don't recall our house (which was very small) being stinky from the diaper pail.

I just asked a similar Q and the advice that worked was to sprinkle in some baking soda and change bags midweek. I put the first bag outside now. I asked my service to send extra bags.
