So, I'm kind of excited and somewhat scared at the same time. I went to the dr today and we have scheduled an induction for tomorrow night. We're going to use Cytotec to help ripen my cervix some more since I'm effacing, but not dilating yet. I've been having contractions for about two weeks now, but none have been productive. The reason we're ( Read more... )

puppp, amniotomy (arom), blood pressure, induction, cervidil/cytotec

I'd run from that doctor. Cytotec is not FDA approved induction drug. The company itself has put out statements that it's NOT SAFE inducing full-term infants.

"In August 2000, Searle, Cytotec's manufacturer, sent physicians a letter reminding them that Cytotec was not approved for use as a cervical ripening agent and that it was contraindicated for use in pregnancy (14). The letter listed serious adverse effects associated with using Cytotec, including maternal or fetal death, uterine rupture, and severe vaginal bleeding and shock. "

If you must be induced ask to use Cervidil it's just as effective and is less risky overall.

Yeah, all of the above. I would run away from it. The reading I've done it is rather scary.

YES! sheesh, I wasn't aware too many docs were still using this as a primary option. I wish I knew who the doc and the practice was, I would definitely be calling them!

Actually, it's addressed on my induction sheet. Plus, I am a nurse anyway although not L&D so I have been doing some research. It's not FDA approved, but it is used a lot for cervical dilation. So I'm okay with it.

I know you say you're okay with it, but off-label use aside, it's been shown to increase risk of uterine rupture greatly and should not be used for cervical dilation past 13 weeks.
