Okay. So I am pregnant, and due in a month (yay!).
I find there are times in my pregnancy (usually during the hormonal "surges") where I feel like total crap. It feels like I used to when I was on Depo Provera. The depo made me really sick, and I had REALLY bad side effects from it.

Well, after I give birth, I might be looking into HBC after I am ( Read more... )

Progestin-only birth control pills are safe to take during breastfeeding.

I THINK the NuvaRing is as well, but don't take my word for it. If anyone can correct me on that, please do.

After being suggested the NR, I decided against it. I did some research, and it is a mixed hormones BC. *sigh* all the resources I could find, said not to use it. =[

I forgot all the info about the patch (OrthoEvra) and have no idea if it's safe while breastfeeding or anything, but I just wanted to recommend it anyway (obviously you'd have to do some research). I was on it for over three years and will be going on it again after I give birth (I'm not breastfeeding so I have no concerns there).

You know, this breastfeeding thing makes it REALLY hard to find BC LOL.

I will look into the patch, but if it is more than just progesterone based, I can't use it. *sigh*

I never even thought about that with breastfeeding since I never considered breastfeeding, but yeah, I can imagine that would be a pain! I guess I should be thankful that I can easily go back on the patch even though I've been bitching about having to go back on it (I dunno why, I didn't have any side effects or anything :P)

LOL. I think, as a woman, it's your right to bitch about birth control, even if it works for you ;-)

I second the IUD suggestion. I think either Mirena (which has a small local dose of progesterone similar to the POP) or Paragard would be appropriate for breastfeeding. Check out iud_divas.

I used LAM and FAM to avoid until I was ready to TTC. My fertility returned with my cycle at about 13 months postpartum, we started using withdrawal during the fertile phases (yeah, not the most effective prevention, but hubby was really busy and we didn't have sex very often, LOL.) Then we started TTC at about 18 months pp and succeeded on the second cycle.

Hopefully you got some answers about which component of the Depo shot tends to cause those side effects! I don't blame you for being wary, my reaction to HBC was much more subtle but I still never plan to go back on it!

You could try FAM (I forgot what the acronym stands for). Check out the book- Taking Charge of Your Fertility. And there's an lj community too. It's based on science, it's NOT the rhythm method, and it works- both for avoiding and achieving pregnancy. I stayed pregnancy-free for over a year using that method. The only thing is that you have to either abstain from sex or use a condom when you're fertile (that was my oopsie that got me preggers- but I knew I was fertile at the time so it's not the method's fault). And of course you have to chart.. just keep track of your waking temp and your cervical fluid. It gets really easy after you're used to it though. And it's fascinating to learn about your cycles- it's more than just menstruation.

I got into it because I was sick of being on HBC and condoms weren't cutting it.
