Isn't whistling generally frowned upon in libraries?

Not this one.

Intriguing.

The library's magic is, like everything else in the City, apparently designed to drive us all insane.

Some more than others, presumably.

So it seems.

...I'm sorry for threatening you.

What kind of chess?

The standard variety.

Boring. You should try Tri-Dimensional Chess.

The constant rearrangement of the shelves does make things quite difficult. It sometimes takes me hours to shelve two or three books.

Are you the librarian?

No, merely a volunteer.

Gee, you'd think they'd at least pay you, what with the uncooperative working conditions and all.

You're aware of Maslow?

As for the library, I've pretty much given up on it. I tend to get my books from bookstores, although they're a lot less free that way.

Is there some reason I shouldn't be?

I haven't found any of the bookstores yet.

There's a large percentage of people who aren't. Are you interested in psychology?

There's a place called Bilton and Scaggs that's my personal favorite, but there's a few others scattered around. The City's big enough for that, at least.

Among other things.

Hm. Haven't heard of that one yet. Is it in the Square?
