I think there are other ways round this, as well. Surely there are government buildings which could be converted to flats for MPs while in London, which would allow increased security, pooling of resources, etc.?
I have a deal of sympathy with the arguments against putting all the MPs in one building thus making another juicy target for whoever-has-the-latest-grievance, but yes, that would be another way to deal with it (we were typing up replies at the same time *G*).
All this furore over expenses could have been easily avoided had the parties (all of them) not continued to vote for the status quo, if they had decided to actually abide by the same sort of expenses rules that are enforced on businesses and their employees. Yes, they need to be fairly recompensed for having to maintain two homes (where they don't live within the bounds of London itself), but I don't think hiking the salary up to cope with the MPs for Wales and Scotland etc is the way to do it (as the ones in London just end up with rather a lot of extra money with no additional expenses outgoing
