["Written"/Accidental Voice]

[Lying on top of the pages of an open journal, are two sheets of paper. One has a recipe for chocolate and the second has a recipe for peanut butter filled chocolate eggs. They appear to have been copied by hand from recipe books in the library; in the margins, there are careful calculations to expand these recipes to ( Read more... )

[Fenimore has not been having fun with the new electric devices. For the most part, they made her nervous and she tried to ignore them as best she could.

This did not apply to the stove, though. The stove, she just hated.

She sighed as she smelled the by-now familiar smell of something burning. Granted, the specific food was unfamiliar, but she could guess that was its smell when burning. She wandered into the kitchen a couple of moments after she smelled it.]

Are you sure that you can't find the old stove anywhere?

That's supposed to be their job, right? It can't be that hard.

I'm not sure about that, but... it's at least worth looking into.

It can't hurt to ask.

...But I guess we're still stuck with it until then, huh?

Maybe you should just leave the cooking to the other volunteers. [Since presumably either Shirley mentioned it to Fenimore or Fenimore just stalked Shirley's offer over the journals.] The rest of them might be able to use these things properly, however that is.

[Shirley shakes her head with a sigh.]

No... I promised her my help. I don't want to go back on that. And... [Here, she smiles wryly.] It's about time I got this stove to behave... we've been having too many sandwiches, lately.

[There's a pause as Fenimore compares their sandwich-laden days with the warm food of the past.]

...Well, I can't argue with that.

[Shirley, besides being tired of sandwiches herself, misses being able to cook properly.]

Once I figure it out, what do you think we should have?

[There's a pause as Fenimore puts some thought into this, rather than just instantly saying "jam tarts."]

Well, since we've been having to eat so much plant-food, it would be nice to have some seafood. Maybe we could cook some clams?

It's been a long time since we've had steamed clams... [... just the thought of it is making her crave seafood.]

Oh, that sounds good. With butter and maybe some onions.... [...Shirley's not the only one craving it now.]

Or with noodles and cream sauce...

Mmmm. [She closes her eyes for a moment with a longing sigh. That sounded good.]

...There's got to be a better way to use this thing. [She gives the stove a light kick.] Maybe you should ask someone to tell you what kinds of tricks there are to using it.

Hmm. [Shirley absently nibbles on the nail of one of her forefingers as she thinks, trying to sort out who amoung her friends would know how to use an elec-ricity stove.] ... Haruki could, maybe?...
