EUINDIA GRID Part II

We at NPSF-SANG, C-DAC Pune, are in the process of setting up our own local grid, one with complete functionality of a grid. Here, I give a brief description of the key tems related to high performance computing (HPC) and the work that we do, as well as an overview of the EUINDIA Grid project. All terms are overly simplified to cater to lay-man ( Read more... )

If a desktop is not in use...
Having seen the waste amount of CPU cycles that the computers at the NCST Student Lab. would have. I once tried setting up this at a PC, of the lab, but I guess it didn't work out well. Good to know that at least you are now able to get onto it!

As you may have figured out the hard way, adding a resource to a grid is not such an easy task after all. For one, you will have to have root privileges over a machine. Then, you will have to apply for the membership of the virtual organization that you want to provide support in terms of computing power, you then will have to get a host certificate from a certification authority recognized by your chosen virtual organization. Further problems emerge as your machine may not be having a public IP address (in which case you will have to get one for it), then the VO will add your machine's hostname and IP to the list of worker nodes and assign it to a compute element which then becomes the master of your computer. The next challenge arises in configuring your system to work for the grid only when you don't need it for your own purposes and so on. There are a lot of teething issues in a grid, you know.

Going pretty well thank you. I probably will elaborate more about it in a new blog post. The whole series of workshops end tomorrow.
