Day 3: Health

red mittens, in Malabrigo Worsted in "Ravelry Red", knit on size 7 needles. Most basic mitten pattern.

I really wasn't planning on knitting anything for anybody this Christmas. I wanted it to be quiet since I was working much more and running around doing things for mom and I really wanted my knitting to be a nice relaxing break for me, not a mad rush to get things done. Then things went off the rails a bit when we learned my aunt was in the hospital.

We don't exactly have the closest relationship with my dad's sister. It kind of hurts, seeing how close I am with my mom's family, and knowing how distant I am with my dad's. There's just a lot there, and as horrible as it sounds, I just don't want to get involved in their drama (I've got enough of my own, thanks.) But this is his sister in the hospital and we hadn't seen her in years- we went to go see her.

Honestly, we barely recognized her. It's clear that she's ill, and has been for a while now even if she is getting better. Even before her illness(es) life hasn't been kind, but we had a good visit and got caught up in everything. Mom told her how her mom (gramma) would be proud of my knitting, and how I was working in a shop and teaching. She asked if she could get me to knit her a pair of mittens; she explained how in the process of going from clinic to hospital, back home and then back to the hospital again, her Olympic mittens had been lost or stolen.

So, I made them. I chose Malabrigo because it's super soft and luxe and even if they were lost again, she deserved them. And the red to replace those Olympic mittens.

I still haven't seen her since Christmas- I don't know where she is again (but I know where to start looking.) But they've been finished for a month and a half now, and just waiting for her to come into my life again.
