14valentines Day 11: Economics & Work

If I were more clever and less tired, this would be the place where I'd write about how knitting is something that was once done by skilled men in guilds and valued in the home and society as very important work, and then became (in our culture) derided as only "women's work" and later "granny-ish". How it's being "reclaimed" and how the industry, largely spearheaded by women like Deborah Stoller, is maturing and rethinking standards and practises and that too is spreading.
But I'm too tired and don't feel that clever right now, so I'm going to write about a project inspired by one of my favourite characters from Discworld instead.

Magrat Socks (Ravelry page)

Named for Magrat from the Discworld books. Straightforward and (some would say) plain socks. Colorway is Wicked Witch, but as she would say, this is an unfortunate misnomer stemming from people’s fear of the unknown and the power of women.

Cable cast on 68 over two needles held together, then distribute over the needles and do K1 P1 ribbing, for 10 rows (3/4 of an inch).
Continue in stockinette for 5 1/2 inches from start, then do a slipped stitch heel flap. Right side sl 1, k1 wrong side sl 1, p all
Turn heel:
k 21, k2tog k1, turn
sl1 k10, p2tog, p1 turn
etc. k across, pick up 14 stitches along flap and 3 sts in gap, k across instep, pick up 3 sts in gap and 14 stitches on flap.
decrese for gusset
continue in stockinette until sock measures 7 1/2 inches from heel.
start toe with double decreases until 12 stitches remain, graft toe shut.
