For 14valentines I plan on updating every day with either a knit finished project and details, a well used recipe or some other creative expression. I had hoped to have pictures ready for all of them, but that may have to happen a bit later due to my issues with my camera and computer not being compatible. >:|

Day 1: Body Image

Project name: Reinvent <3 (the Braided Pullover, by Alina Khasanova in the Fall 2008 Interweave Knits)
(ravelry link)
Yarn: 6.5 skeins of Patons Classic Merino in Cognac Heather (a reddish-pink heather)
Needles: Options Interchangeable Nickel Plated Circular Knitting Needle Set, sizes 6 and 7 with a 24 and 32 inch cable

Start: January 8, 2009
End: February 1, 2009

Details: The sweater is (mostly) knit in the round from the bottom up, starting with a a few rounds of stockinette that curl up and then a 2x2 rib. After several inches of ribbing the pattern changes to reverse stockinette and a cable grows out of the stitches, and moves diagonally up the front: when it reaches the slightly more than halfway point it then becomes the edge of the v-neck shaping (the point where the sweater is no longer knit in the round, but side to side and then in pieces). At the same time, the ribbing continues along the sides of the sweater, making it slinky along the sides of the body. When the all of the shaping for the arms, neck and back are done the stitches are bound off except for the stitches of the cable motif.

The arms are begun in the same way with the stockinette and then the ribbing and then the reverse stockinette with some ribbing continuing up on the underside of the sleeve, again giving it that bit of slinkiness. Once both arms are done everything is grafted together. The live neckband stitches are picked up and continues in 2x2 ribbing until they reach around and fit in the v-neck opening, where they are grafted on to the sweater.

Thoughts and impressions:This is a really nice pullover, both easy and challenging in different ways. It's fairly straightforward, but with details like the travelling cable means that you really have to pay attention to what's going on on the front.

This is the first sweater or cardigan I've done where I followed the directions exactly and didn't change anything. Of course, now I'm wishing I had, or at least read the finished specs sloser so I could have done one simple, super easy modification right at the start: the finished length for the larger sizes is an inch shorter than for the smaller sizes (WTF?) and all of them are a bit shorter than I would normally wear anyway.

I wanted to challenge myself style-wise with this pullover. I really love the colour, but it's something that I had convinced myself previously that I couldn't wear (wtf, I KNOW). Also, the pattern has that bit of aforementioned slinkiness, and a rather whimsical cable and neckline. I tend to go more towards basic and "classic" designs. This is something that made me think about what I "can" and "can't" wear.

I named it Reinvent <3 because of a) my continued joy in naming projects after Panic at the Disco lyrics, b) the goal of doing this for 14valentines and Valentines day in general, and c) the reinvention of my notions of what I can and can't do with a pullover.

(And later for 14valentines, my thoughts on issues with sizing in patterns)
