[2] IRC is ok for conversations and discussions, but when you want to work together, especially on code then it's seriously limited or it's rather a PITA to keep the job going. Nothing matches sitting next to one another and doing things.
[3] When you are sitting together you can actually see the person do things, and he can see what you do. So, no time is wasted in taking pains to show others what you do as they can just peep in or watch you to understand what you do.
[4] IRC doesnt have voice and they cant show people's face, so when met in person and working together, the person can keep speaking what he is doing and you can also see him smile, cry and all sort if expressions which reveals his mood.
