An idea, I have been nurturing since a long long time, ever since I started my KDE life back in late 2005 is going to come true coming weekend. I always read that on the dot and lists that a hackathon has been organised somewhere in Norway or Germany or somewhere else where KDE developers/artists/contributors would meet and do some good KDE work to ( Read more... )

What different is expected to be achieved from a in person meet if it were to be instead done online, say via IRC ?

Hackfest are well focused and result oriented. IRC can lead to chaos and in very rare case, result is achieved. That is why Debian also focus on real life BSP and annual conference where all hackers meet and fix problems face to face.

And, you can match IRC nickname to person and offer Beer you already promised sometime on IRC.

Time to arrange hackfest at Office too..

[1] You can understand people well and build a stronger ring of trust when you are meeting in person. IRC can always hide whom you are.
[2] IRC is ok for conversations and discussions, but when you want to work together, especially on code then it's seriously limited or it's rather a PITA to keep the job going. Nothing matches sitting next to one another and doing things.
[3] When you are sitting together you can actually see the person do things, and he can see what you do. So, no time is wasted in taking pains to show others what you do as they can just peep in or watch you to understand what you do.
[4] IRC doesnt have voice and they cant show people's face, so when met in person and working together, the person can keep speaking what he is doing and you can also see him smile, cry and all sort if expressions which reveals his mood.

Wonderful effort. If possible, get the start and the close recorded. Would be awesome to have that on video.

I am a KDE user from Germany. And I think that an indian Hackathon is a great idea. Your project is a great example of KDE's global success and will shurly make it even better.

Keep on the fantastic work and be shure that the KDE users all over the world apreciate what you do for KDE and for us!
