Fire in the sky

A mysterious “fireball” lit up the skies at 2:45 AM today. I saw some sort of a flash through my window, and maybe 2 minutes after that I heard some sort of a sound. “a rock about the size of a computer monitor.”
What a bizarre comparison! Is that a 14inch or a 26inch? Flat screen LCD or oldskool CRT? And why not 'the size of a microwave' or 'the size of a 3 month old' or 'the size of 2 average household cats'?

OK, I'll loosen up now.

It wasn't easy to measure while it was burning up in the atmosphere, so any of those could apply. There are 2 main possibilities for choice of metaphor:
1. The astronomers who discovered it have monitors exactly that size.
2. The first stab at the copy had it the size of a bread box or an IBM Selectric, but that was hastily updated.
