My current greatest pet peeve in contemporary art

is textures. I have no idea why, but I tried to put it into words after some good thought and I think I know why. Just might, as far as explaining that small frustration in the back of my head when i look at such pieces.

Like, I'll come across something neat and be like "oh wow thats pretty well done." and then after a few moments Ill notice the " ( Read more... )

Textures can be good if used sparingly, but a lot of these digital "paintings" border on the realm of photomanipulation. There's a well known artist on DA who will adamantly tell you his works are paintings. I'll let you judge for yourself.

In a way digital media has spoiled us. Something fucks up, no problem. There's an undo button. Can't get the nitty gritty details right? Overlay a texture. I try myself to experiment with real media as much as possible. I would hate to end up solely dependent on a digital crutch.

I've made my own texture before :D Part of it is a little laziness, but honestly some would argue with you that borrowing sources is a form as art as well. Like how people make collage art, etc.

ive been guilty of using stock textures, though i've tried to keep it as sparing as possible

i've got a few ideas for textures i want to make myself, so yeah i definitely agree that if one is gonna use textures, they'd probably get a lot more satisfaction out of creating their own

I once made my own uh, halftone brush. One that I later found useless because photoshop has a halftone filter. Since then, I've been like "fuck it"

I've def been a texture abuser in my time, but I've also made my own textures in more recent times just for more ease of use. From seeking out textures IRL ((streets/walls/trees/etc)) with photography, to making my own in photoshop, to sloppily picking up the water colours and making a mess of myself entirely haha.

Also it's sad, one of my classmates is a concept artist and does the most INCREDIBLY cityscape and landscapes and fantasy backgrounds from crap to a degree of hyper realism that has no competition in my school. But the guy cannot draw people, and is totally unwilling to go to those extra life drawing sessions to improve himself. I think one of my biggest pet peeves is purposefully squandered talent for the sake of laziness.
