I'd intended to go to the 84th Peripatetic Seminar on Sheaves and Logic last weekend: however, what with getting my passport renewed (YOU HAVE A WEEK TO GET YOUR PASSPORT RENEWED BEFORE THE COST GOES UP AND THEY GET EVEN MORE INTRUSIVE! I've got to get results, first. ;)

Essentially, I need to solve the system before the other guy publishes his solution. I've decided to go for it. We'll see what happens. The good news is that I can still get something out of my research even if he publishes first -- just not a degree.

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. Losing three years would really, really suck. It looks like we three need to start a club or something. :(

It's not just us - at least one of the other PhD students in the department here had something similar happen to him. It was early on in his second year, so not too much of a problem, but still.
