Mountaineering terminology

Jul 22, 2008 19:00

I'd like to clarify the question in my last post, namely "what is mountaineering?". Let's start by introducing some standard terminology so we've got something to work with. ( Fun things to do in the mountains )

mountains, munros, rock climbing

How about defining Mountaineering as reaching the tops of mountains that require experience or an experienced companion to climb safely?

My understanding of the term "mixed climbing" was that it typically involved the ascent of snow-covered bouldery gullies - you are generally wearing crampons and using either one or two axes, but you may be standing on lightly snow-covered rock rather than packed snow or hard ice.
