Fernando felt sweat start to build up on his forehead and his lungs were getting tighter. Damn, he shouldn’t have let it go that long between workouts. But to his excuse he just spent the last couple of months drowning in exams, applications and just recently: moving boxes and goodbyes.
He took a deep breath and slowed down. He finally came to a halt and leaned down to rest his hands on his knees. “Dios mios,” he groaned and took a couple of deep breaths. Stretching out again he wiped away a few drops of sweat that had run down his cheeks.
He was about to continue his run (maybe in a slower pace) when a brown, furry ball came crashing into his legs. As he looked down he saw two brown eyes staring up at him and he pulled out his ear buds.
“Hi there little one,” he said and crouched down and leaned towards the puppy. “Where did you come from, hm?” Fernando looked around as he scratched the puppy behind it’s ear and it started panting happily. His eyes searched the park and fell on a guy that was frantically running towards him. The guy was wearing skinny jeans and a band shirt with his arms covered in colourful tattoos. Fernando sucked in a breath and stared at the man as he came closer. Maybe this city wouldn’t be too bad after all if the guys looked like that. The guy stopped in front of Fernando and panted. He sighed, frowned and moaned “Freya!”
Fernando shrugged to himself. “Close enough to Fernando,” he thought before taking a closer look on the guys face: brown untidy hair, freckles and a strong jawline.
“Hi,” Fernando said and the guy looked at him as if just realising he was there.
“Oh, hi,” he said, picking up the puppy and letting it happily lick his face. “Did she bother you? Freya, I told you not to bother strangers.” The puppy looked at him with big eyes and let out a small bark.  “Good girl,” the stranger said and grinned. Fernando suddenly felt extremely awkward and like he was intruding on something personal. He stood up from where he had been crouching down and as he moved the guy looked at him. “Hey, thanks for watching her. I just got her, and we haven’t really agreed on the rules yet.” Fernando chuckled and the stranger smiled. He had a really nice smile Fernando noticed. It softened his otherwise hard lines.
Freya let out an impatient bark and started moving in the guy’s arms. He fastened the leash he had in his hand on the collar around her neck and put her down. She immediately started tugging him away from Fernando.
“Thanks again!” the stranger said over his shoulder as he was being dragged away. “Maybe we’ll see you around sometime.”
Fernando nodded and the guy turned his attention back to Freya. “Maybe,” Fernando mumbled and put his ear buds back in and started running in the opposite direction.
